Hurley, a lawyer who owns a gold mine in Calaveras county, Cal., and is an ex-sapreme judge of Wisconsin, spoke in Ashland and Medford last Thursday and Fridav in behalf of Bryan. He is an old republican. Hon. H. L. Barkley made a grand speech in Ashland Saturday night in be half of Bryan, and was pronounced as the most eloquent speaker that has ad dressed an audience in this campaign. He spoke to a big crowd at Medford Mondav afternoon. Barkley made lots of friends here for the esnse and himself. Ben Butterworth of Ohio spoke to a large audience at Chautauqua tabernacle Mon day evening. He was met at Siskiyou by Judge Chas. H. Carey and Hon. O. N. Denny of Portland, Max Pracht of Jeru salem, Dr. J W. Robinson of Jack sonville, Conductor Geo. W. Lynde and a delegation of Ashland repnblicans. The Ashland band in uniform and the Willits, Bolton, Eddv and Walsworth quartette furnished the vocal music. Conductor Lynde introduced C. B Watson, who in troduced the speaker. The Bryanites had copious extracts from Ben Butterwoith’s letter to Senator Teller printed and circu lated. They appear on the first page of this issue. Butterworth acknowledged the same and said they were his views and those of the republican party yet. But the next hour he was engaged in knocking the stuffing out of the propositions set forth in his letter to Teller. Butterworth is a pleas ant speaker and done as well as could be expected under the circumstances. He spoke at Medtord Tuesday afternoon and his tell-tale views in favor of bimetalism and a moderate tariff accompanied him there, where the venerable old Quaker again tied himself up in a knot. On Tuesday evening Judge W. 8. Cro well was greeted in the same place with a splendid audience. The Ashland Band was secured for the occasion and discoursed music on the street and in the hall, and Messers. Beswick and Howell favored the audience with a couple campaign duets. Frank Williams introduced the speaker who said this was his first political speech on national issues since his residence in this section and represented the honest convic tions of his heart and that he had never talked to this people, from the rostrum, anything but bis convictions. Judge Cro well declared the tariff was not in it and delivered a partisan speech that pleased the Bryanites to the Queen's taste. Besides setting forth some telling arguments the speaker worked into the audience some feeling of sentiment by acting; much of his rich roast on Hanna, McKinley and Butter worth being through the arts of a perform er, his two principle lines being high trag edy and low comedy. He nailed Butter worth’s record to the cross in good shape and fine finish and brought out something new He bad business with Butterworth's law firm and in a recent letter asked "Is Butterworth a golb-bug? The reply dated Washington, July 21st and dictated and signed by Butterworth said: “Mr. Butter worth is not a gold bug; but a red hot. un compromising silver man and will so remain until the end of time and things, and he re marks farther the silver men are very numerous hereabout« in the republican party and will grow more and more nntil the perfect day.” The speaker also read the following telegram from Butterworth, dated Washington, July 18,1896, to A. J. Warner, the siver champion, who was at 8t Louis preparing for the populist conven tion convening there. “Wherein St. Lou is will a letter reach you? 1 am devoted to thecause of bimetallism, firm as a rock. Will write fully. Answer." So it looked like Butterworth intended joining the “an archist, repudiationists and populists.” But late in August the associated press dispatches- announced that Butterworth had called on McKinley at Canton “and that do settle it.” Hanna soon sent him west. The Railroad Asaessment Raised. The important business before the county board of equalization at Jackson ville was the railroad assessment, which baa became a celebrated case in this county within the past year or so. Thr company filed their usual petition for a reduction, but the full board, consisting of Judge Crowell, Aasesor Klippel and County Clerk Jackson unanimously stood by the celebrated “Jackson assess ment” which raises the lands, etc., yerv materialy and the roadbed from $4500 to $10,000 per mile. It is an eminently just assessment and will help relieve the resident tax-payers of a considerable burden. There is nothing lixe agitation after all, and this turn in events is an eucouraging sign that even politicians can be moved when the people in their sovereign might rise up and present them with an “object lesson” such as the physical evidence of what they want as it was in the case of Mr. Jackson. Messrs. Klippel and Crowell, never the lees, are entitled to great respect and will be given due credit in the hearts of the peo ple for doing their duty in this matter. Two of San Francisco’s best known, wealthiest and most popular society people, Walter Castle and his wife, are, according to dispatches from London, in jail in that city awaiting the outcome of a charge of larceny.
