Col. Frank V. Drake b Speech.
The Chautauqua Auditorium contained
almost as many people Tuesday night as
sembled to hear the silver Republican
speaker, Col. Frank V. Drake of Portland,
as appeared in the same place in the after
noon to listen to Senator Mitchell. There
were more voters present and many ladies
too. Col. Drake was introduced by M. F.
Eggleston as a man who had always been
a Republican and a good silver man and
was still so. He was one of probably a
million men who had walked out of the old
Republican organization with that grand
old man, Henry M. Teller. Col. Drake
was given a cordial greeting. He talked
for quite two hours and held the interest
of his audience closely as he lead them step
by step along the hopeful lines of a policy
independent of foreign dictation which
ought to govern our financial as well as
our industrial an<l domestic affairs. Indeed
the monev question in the speaker’s view
was purely a domestic affair. The Colonei
gave a brief resume of the history of t e
Republican party, showing that it bad
abandoned its honorable traditions, prin
ciples, and character and bad consequently
taken on new leaders. It was charged
that the Democratic party had done
nothing for silver but while John Sherman
was utilizing every resource in the* interest
of gold inonometalism, he could net forget
old “Silver Dick” Bland of Missouri with
his silver cohorts always in the saddle and
on picket duty to appt ise the people ofthe ap
proach of the enemy and guard them as far
as practicable» The inconsistency of repub
lican leaders who bad heretofore stood for
independent laimetalism and were now
crying out for McKinlev was thoroughly
exposed and interspersed with occasional
and telling humorous stories which threw
the crowd into roars of laughter. Some ot
them will be recollected a long time. The
speaker gave a lucid explanation of the
money question and in the course of bis re
marks drew out the great principles at is
sue between labor and capital which he
well understands, cot failing to point out
that Lincoln's view a« to labor and capital
had beeD reversed. Lincoln had put labor
before capital as labor was the creator but
now the gold-bugs had the idea that capital
was the parent and dictator ot labor. The
silver men were delighted with the closing
of the "lay’s debate feeling that they had
lost nothing and probably bad gained sub
stantial advantages. The gold men haye
been gathering about in small groups since
Tuesday discussing the outlook with the
hope of rendering one to the other some
grain of consolation but it seems to be a
case of Rachel weeping and would not be
comforted.

We have carefully examined all matters
