    VALLEY RECORD
ASHLAND, Or...Thursday. Aug 20, 1896.
PERSONAL. AND SOCIAL.
Geo. F. McConnell Arrested.
George F. McConnell, the defaulting
keeper of records and seal of tbe grand
lodge of Knights of Pythias, reached Port-
land Sunday in the custody of Detective
Cody. McConnell fled from Portland
last month to avoid tbe consequeuces of
his crimes, and was recognized on tbe
streets of Roseland, B. C., over a week
ago by a traveling man from Portland,
who notified the members of the order in
Portland. As Judge Stephens was going
up there, be waB directed to hunt him
up and cauee hie arrest, which be did.
McCoDnell told Judge Stephens that be
would return to Portland voluntarily,
and Detective Cody reports that he kept
bis word in that respect and did not oc
casion him any trouble whatever.
Detective Cody did not go to Roseland,
but proceeded to Northport, in Washing
ton, a point about 10 miles from Roseland,
and close to the British Columbia line.
The marshal of Roseland sent McConnell
over to meet the Portland officer. Mc
Connell was given tbe choice by tbe
marshal of Roseland of returning volun
tarily or waiting the arrival of extradition
papers. He chose the former course.
To a reporter he said, in a cell in the
Portland city jail: “With all due respect
to you, I have nothing to say. There has
been enough Baid already. I am too
sick to talk.”
McConnell looks wearied and haggard,
and shows plainly that he has been under
a severe nervous strain for a long time
past. He was informed that space would
be cheerfully afforded him, if he desired
to say anything regarding tbe charges
against him. He Bbook bis head, and
declined to talk further.
Detective Cody states that McConnell,
on the way back, said that be was not bo
bad “in the bole,” and that he bad hopes
of being able to straighten matters out.
It has been reported that McConnell
cashed an endowment policy for $1000,
due to Mrs. Matthies, whose husband, a
prominent member of tbe Knights of
Pythias, died recently, and made way
with the money, and Detective Cody says
that McConcell informed him that he
had not cashed this policy.
The Railroad Taxes.
W. W. Bretherton, the Southern Pa-
cific’s lobbyist and tax agent, was down
from Portland the past week looking ud
the company’s interest in the assessment
of their property in Jackson county. As
sessor Jackson, before assuming his dut
ies as county clerk, assessed the com
pany at the eame figures as bis assess
ment of two years ago, including $10,000
per mile on their road bed. The assess
ment will come before the new equaliza
tion board, consisting of Henry Klippel,
appointed assessor to fill out Jackson’s
unexpired term, County Clerk Jackson
and County Judge W, S. Crowell. Much
interest is being taken in regard to the
valuation that the new board will place
on the railroad’s property and particular
ly the raise on the 63 miles of road-bed
from $4500 per mile to $10,000 per mile.
The recent county election clearly dem
onstrated that there was no doubt but
that the citizens of the count? sustained
the stand taken by Assessor Jacksou.
Hence it is presumed that the two other
members of the board will at least go for
a raise in the assessment of some kind,
and they may compromise somewhere
between the figures as equalized last
year, $4500 per mile on the road-bed,
aDd the $10,000 fixed in the assessment.
It may be that the railroad company will
attempt to bulldoze the new board into
the old figures, but that is not prob
able in the face of the generally conceded
wish ot the cax-pavers and citizens of
Jackson county. The present indica
tions point more to either a substantial
raise in the assessment or a firm and
aggressive fight. The new board of
equalization will meet the first Wednes
day in October.

:
Oregon, Mt. Majesty and Crater Lake.
OregoD, the central Pacific state, is
within itself complete in topographical
feature and outline. It has many val
leys, lakes and rivers as well as lofty
mountains, whose horizons limit the
varied landscape views that intervene be
tween the foreet-clad backgrounds.
Its most interesting mountain range,
the Cascades, is of volcanic origin, aud
like a great partition wall, extending
throughout the state, divides the east
ern from the western portions. In thia
tortuous chain of mountains are to be
found Bnowclad alpine heights and al
most inaccessible regions of Bublime
wildness which the innovations of man
can not tame or improve. Though
many of its wildnesses have been pene
trated by the daring hunter and pros
pector a thousand jungles and rugged
summits remain pathless and unknown.
Mt. Hood, the northern Bentiuel of
peaks, looks down on three states, and
far at sea, like a terrestrial light house
is visible to the mariner. Gazing south
ward we behold an extended vista of
mountain peaks, namely: Mt Jefferson,
Three Sisters, Diamond Peak and Mt.
Pitt or Mt McLaughlin. This last moun
tain, standing at the southern termina
tion of the Cascade range, is a sharply
defined pyramid rising from the midst of
picturesque forests and lakes.
But in our bird6-eye journey let us re
trace our flight a few miles to the east
ward, where we may wander through
the battlefields of ancient nature and
upon time-sculptured monuments read
the chaos of ages , where flame-penciled
records tell us of Mt. Majesty, the mon
arch of mountains, that stood above all
clouds save her own lurid, smokey crown
that shadowed a Hood and a Shasta,
and extinguished its fiery Bbowers in
the sea.
Were there any human eyes to be
hold the terrible spectacle when the
fierce engines of demolition
spared
neither life nor its realm oi abode?
Were there rude savages who, awed be
fore the diety of fire, with incantations
wild, invoked the Vulcans to spare their
bunting grounds; and when they saw
the stormy pyrotechnics dimmed for a
moment by pitchy clouds of stygain
blackness, did they imagine they were
doomed by the war of the Gods?
But the lofty must crumble and the
great must fall. What could depict the
horror of the primeval Klamath as the
ash-covered earth rocked and groaned
beneath him, until the pent up thunders
of the molten deep burst forth iD mid air,
rending asunder the ancient Crater
lake mountain, which went crashibg
downwards upon the powers that created
it, to smoulder in the gulf that entombs
a giant of the past?
Another age has dawned and the
acene has changed. The artillery o. war
like nature has ceased, aud her fortresses
are silent. Ten thousand winters have
chilled her drossy walls, which now re
flect in a lake of Bapphire, upon whose
shores all travelers halt; where no arrow
is drawn from the quiver and where
