VALLEY
RECOBD
Chinese Laborers Attacked.
Sissons, Cal., Aug. 10.—A demonstra
tion was held in Sissons yesterday
against the Chinese laborers employed
in the new McCloud river railroad to
the Fall river timber belt. A crowd of
white men, consisting of laborers, tramps
and men cut of work, gathered and in
cited each other to riot. After dark
Sunday evening, a large crowd left for
the railroad camp, four miles from here.
They drove the Chinese, about 40 in
number, with their equipment, from
camp to McCloud river, five miles away.
Several Chinese were bruised with stones
and clubs, but none ware seriously hurt.
Manager Van Arsdale, of the Siskiyou
Lumber Company, which is building the
road, Bay8 the Chinese, were employed
because it was necessary to finish the
road this season. He prefers white labor
if they will work steadily. Tbe Chinese
get the same wages as tbe white men,
except board. Sheriff Hobbs, of Yreka,
will be asked for'deputies to protect the
road, and the Chinese will return to
work. No father trouble is anticipated.
Mazamas Leave for Crater Lake.
Yesterday was uncomfortably warm,
but for all that, there was a momentary
boreal breeze experienced by Borne thirty
people at the depot when tbe southbound
overland rolled in from Portland. A del
egation of Mazamas, including the prin
cipal officers of that club, were aboard,
and they were on their way to Crater
lake. They were properly trimmed cut
and wore the red, white and blue rib
bons of their organization, as did the re
ceiving delegation of the Ashland Crater
Lake Club, who appeared to be repre
sented by Dr. C. B. Watson and Prof.
Whited; but the insignia certainly be
lied tbe idea of brotherly affiliation, and
their use was not apparent because of
any big crowd, for that was decidedly
thin. D. R. Mills, a hitherto prominent
official of the local Crater Lake Club,
serving as vice-president, along with Dr.
Watson, did not show up at all—nor the
Ashland band; nor was there any demon
stration at all suitable to tbe inflamed
ideas which Drs. Watson, Mills and
Whited have promulgated for months
for this Mazama excursion. Tbe greet
ing appeared to surprise tbe Mazamas.
Evidently sentiment was suppressed and
if the Mazamas have manifested any, it
has been after they got out in the woods
where they could swear deep and loud
without offending anv of Dr. Watson’s
city ordinances. Prof. Whited, a special
ist, scrutinized tbe delegation as if he
might be in search of sbeepherders look
ing for a range about tbe lake.
The cold wave even frosted Dr. Watson’s
"no failure, he having it in charge himself’’
lecture which was on tbe bills for last night.
“His original theory” ot formation of Cra
ter lake, (good both in Europe and Amer
ica) is therefore lost to both the world and
this town. The wonderful information still
slumbers in tbe department reports
‘‘though Dr. Watson’s description has
gained a reputation on both sides of the
continent.”
The Altamonts refused to “dumb” the
provided lumber wagons of the Crater lake
club and started from their headquarters
at the Depot hotel about 4 o’clock this
morning, after “sitting down” on the local
Crater lake club as completely as the
weather would afford. Even Dr. Charley
Gillette’s great Kohlsaatian-3oup-ho:ises-
along-the-route benefaction, was coldly
spurned with an altitudinal sniff snatched
from the summit of Mt. Pitt.
Not a soul of the Ashland Crater lake
society accompanied tbe expedition. How
ever, Prof. Whited left two hours later
with “sealed orders” the contents of which
are not known at this end of the line. The
presumption is that the mysterious docu
ments are either to protect Dr. Watson’s
first mprtage (gold) bonds and barbe wire
fencejtfround the lake or an ultimation by
Prof. Whited to the sheepherders who
have the temerity to “step on the grass.”
I
Bryan Club Meeting.
In obedience to the call made about
fifty citizens assembled in the citv hall
Saturday night and perfected the or
ganization of the Bryan club of Ashland.
The committee on permanent organiza
tion reported a constitution and by laws
which were adopted and the following
officers were elected unanimously: Pres
ident; A. D. Lsucks; vice presidents,
Frank Williams, T. J. Howell and E, J.
Farlow; secretary, M. F. Eggleston;
treasurer Robert Taylor. These six
offiicers constitute the executive com
mittee of the club. Mr. Loucks on tak
ing tbe chair made some appropriate re
marks. He said that up to this year he
had always voted the Republican ticket,
but regarding its policy now as entirely
foreign to the original doctrine which
brought the party into being, and the
expressed purpose of the party to fix tbe
gold standard on the country as a crime
against humanity, he would not vote
that ticket again. Short speeches were
made by Judge Williams, E. J. Kaiser,
Judge Batchelor, Capt. Eggleston, Judge
Howell, Judge Luckey, Mr. Hockersmith
and General Applegate, Eighty-four
members are already enrolled. The club
will have weekly Saturday night meet
ings, but in view of the army reunion
exercises this week, the next meeting
will be held Saturday evening the 22nd
inst. in the city hall.

Cecil Rhodes, whose connection with
the British Chartered South Africa
Company and his alleged complicity in
-the Transvaal raid of Dr. Jameson are
well known, will undoubtedly shortly
be brought to book for the part he took
in bringing alxnit an invasion of the
territory of a friendly state. A com

made a member of her majesty’s privy
council, but his name will I k * stricken

All records of camp meeting collec
tions were broken at Old Orchards, Me.,
when Rev. Mr. Simpson, a Giristian Al
liance leader, raised $101,324 for foreign
missions. Gold and silver, greenbacks,
pocket pieces, gold watches, bicycles,
gold rings, diamonds, rubies, opals,
heirlooms, a piano, corporation stock
and homesteads were included among
the contributions. It was a sensational
climax to the fortnight’s meeting, held
under Christian Alliance auspices.
The Park theater, Tugby’s museum
anil other buildings in the neighbor
hood of Niagara Falls were destroyed
by fire. The International hotel was on
fire several times ami the guests fled to
the streets. The hotel was only slightly
damaged. The loss will reach $250,000.

released after a term <>f imprisonment,
