The Lake City “Water Spout.”
Redding, Cal., June 9. —The once
beautiful little village ot Lake City,
nestling in the foothills at the head of
Surprise valley, in Modoc county, is a
of devastation, ruin and disaster.
What was once a brisk and lively burg
< 200 inhabitants with neat and cosy
i dwellings and substantial business, is
but a vista of tangled wreckage,
1 nearly every building in the town being
wholly or partially demolished.
The inhabitants of Lake City were
aroused from their early morning
last Friday by tbe roar and
rush of angry waters, and before many
< them bad time to look to tbeir safety
without attempting to save their effects
residences, stores or business places
I a flood of water came pouring down
them from the lowering clouds
' that had been threatening destruction
all night, and when the torrent bad
buildings lay in ruins on all sides.
Lake City had been struck bv a water
—a veritable water cyclone. The
whirling mass of water struck tbe center
' the town with terrific force; tbe fright
i ened residents, warned by the oncoming
ran to and fro in frantic effort to save
themselves from what for a time seemed
certain death. Small trees stumps and
| timbers were carried down and through
the streets with awful force, and tbe
substantial structures were weak
and tottered before the rush of
