The Knife of Max Pracht.
In the voting for national delegates at
the republican state convention, Max
Pracht received 29 out of 236. The Even
ing Telegram reports this scene:
Prior to the voting Max Pracht, ofAsh-
land, who had come into the convention
equipped with a bundle of ballots printed
in large type reading “For delegate at
large to the St. Louis convention, I vote
for Max Pracht of Ashland. He’s all
right,” hurndly aionnted the platform
and declared his withdrawal as a candi
date, claiming he had been “jobbed”.He
said: I came before this convention as
sured of a place on the regular ticket by
one of the Multnomah connty factions
and within the past 24 hours a job has
been put up and I’m out.” As he resum
ed his seat Pracht turned toward where
the Simon faction were seated and in
angry tones said :“8enator Dolph, you’ve
got me to fight from this on. This turning
of me down is a cold-blooded outrage.
Joe Simon, you are not through with me
yet.” With bis face dark with disap
pointed ambition, Pracht then resumed
bis seat.
Later in the dav Max patched up his
grievance with the Portland crowd and
re-entered the race. He was not elected
a delegate but succeeded in getting weli-
up and thus became an alternate, which
will give him considerable federal pie
when McKinley gets in. Max was on
Monday’s train en route east via Cali
fornia.

The Chinese Company which is work

the claim will pay well this season under
their management.
Culver & Co., at tbe mouth of Bark
house creek, have their shaft down
between 30 and 40 feet, and find no
difficulty whatever in keeping the mine
clear of water with the new pump recent
ly put in. The prospect at this mine
would indicate that it will be ona
of the best paying mines along the
river.
The Barkbouse Creek mines of Bil
lups, Humphrey & Qnigley, are etill
producing some handsome quartz which
the owners are satisfied will prove to be
far richer than anything they have
ernshed in the past.
Mining Journal.]
From Captain Brown, manager of the
Elmer-Brown copper mines, near Waldo,
it is learned that a full force of men has
again been put to work in the mines,
developing and taking out ore. A large
proportion of these ores—the oxides,
black and red—are rich enough te bear
shipment, so that, pending the erection
of the new smelting workB, these ores
will be hauled to Grants Pass, and shipp
ed thence to Galveston by rail and thence
by water to New York, where they will
be treated by the Orford reduction works.
Captain Brown further eavs that by May
10th he expects to have ths new plants
proposed to be erected at both the Waldo
and Siskiyou mines in process of con
struction ; but the Waldo plant will be
first put in operation. Tbe additions to
the present machinery at both places
will consist of reverberatory and fusing
furnaces. The first shipments of ore will
be made during the coming week. The
two cotnpaniee owning these groups of
mines will expend considerable money
this summer in the development and
equipment of the mines, and thus em
ployment will be given to a number of
men nt a time when the season ia other
wise dull. _________________
