A larger and more enthusiastic body
of prominent Republicans has seldom
met in Massachusetts than gathered at
the state convention at Boston to elect

Ballington and Mrs. Booth issued a
statement, through Lieutenant-Colonel
Glenn, to the effect that they will under
no circumstances take command of the
Salvation Army in the United States.
This was prompted by a report from
London that efforts are being made to
induce the Booths to accept their old
command.
Dr. L. H. Hallock, pastor of the First
Congregational church, Tacoma, created
a surprise by tendering his resignation
at the conclusion of his morning ser­
mon, and asking its immediate accept­
ance. He will go to Oakland, Cal., for
two months to recover from a throat
affection, and beyond that says he has
no definite plans. He came to Tacoma
from Maine in 1892 as the successor of
Dr. C. O. Brown.
A horse belonging to the fire depart­
ment at Portsmouth, O., died of a mys­
terious disease. It was found that the
horse departed this life from chewing
too much tobacco. The animal con­
sumed three or four large cakes of the
weed daily. Its liver was shrunk to
the size of a baseball, Other horses in
the department eat tobacco, an an order
was promptly issued forbidding any one
to give it to them.
By collision of the westbound freight
train and the eastbound flyer on the
Santa Fe at Shoemaker, N. M., H. G.
Russell and F. D. Pitney, postal clerks,
of La Junta, Colo., were instantly killed
and twelve others were badly injured.
The freight was late and an attempt
was made to reach Shoemaker before
the passenger train left there. The ac
cident occurred on a steep bank of the
river and many passengers miraculously
escaped drowning.
The members of the Cuban Junta in
New York are determined to strike a
blow at Spain which will compel the
United States and other powers to rec­
ognize the patriots. The plan is to fit
out a small but swift cruiser which will
make an attempt to capture or sink at
least one large Spanish merchantman.

Strong Cuban Resolutions.
Senator Mills of Texas introduced the
following joint resolution the other
day: Be it resolved by the senate and
house of representatives of the United
States of America, in congress as­
sembled, that the president of the
United States is hereby directed to re­
quest the government of Spain to au­
thorize the people of Cuba subject to
the sovereignty of Spain to institute
such local government as they may
wish and invest it with such powers as
they may thiDk necessary to secure to
the people of Cuba the right of life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Section 2.—In case Spain shall refuse
to grant to the inhabitants of Cuba the
rightful power of self-government, then
the president of the United States is
hereby directed to take possession of
the island of Cuba with the military
and naval forces of the United States
and hold the same until the people of
Cuba can organize a government deriv­
ing its just powers fium the consent of
the governed, and arm and equip such
military forces as may be necessary to
protect them from invasion.
