VALLEY RECORD. The People's Venezuela in the Senate. The Venezuelan question continues to engage tha atlen:io:i of the senate. A resolution adopted by the foreign rela tions commit lee is to the effect that the maintenance of the Munroe doctrine is held to be vital to the welfare of this country .".nd the countries of the Amer ican c- niinonts. The doctrine, it is as serted, u now in force and has been in force ever since it was established by President Monroe. The resolution de clares it to mean that the acquisition by purchase, aggression or otherwise of any territory on the American conti nent by a foreigu power is an unfriendly act, and such acquisition will not be permitted. Paper. ASHLAND, Or...... Thursday, Jan. 23,1S9G- Mr. Hermann hada regulation third- rate Republican campaign speech pub lished in the Congressional Record one day last week, though he was considerate enough to refrain from delivering it in the house. It will be in circulation soon among his beloved constituents.—Says the Portland Welcome. The national People’s Party convention has been called to meet in St. Louis July 22d. The executive committee appoint ed General Weaver, General J. G. Field > of Virginia; Senator Butler, of North Carolina; John C. Bell, of Colorado; E. M. Wardell, of California; Secretary Turner, of Georgia, and E. Gerry Brown, of Maasacbuetts, a special committee to proceed to Washington January 22, to confer with the bimetallist league as to the advisability of bolding a national convention at the same time and place decided upon by the populists. Sheep Dealing Swindle. J. W. Rockwell, a San Franciscan who has been traveling in California for many years engaged in buying sheep on his paper, has been sentenced at Stockton to seven years in state’s prison for defrauding an island sheep raiser of over $3,009. Rockwell purchased the sheep several years ago and gave the owner an order on a firm at San Fran cisco fur the money. He shipped the shtep to the city, sold them pud pock eted the money. He theq left the state and returned when he thought his crime had been forgotten. The state tax levy of nearly 5 mills, as against 3 mills the previous year, will make the tax payers howl. However, as a diversion from an ugly situation, let us read a chapter from the last repub lican state platform, its celebrated and eloquent economy plank. Here it is: Lively as a Cricket. Although in the first instance as sluggish as a tortoise, the kidnevs becoifie as lively as a cricket when a healthful impulse is given to them with Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, a promoter of activity in these or gans which counteracts a tendency to their lethargy and disease Inaction of the kid neys, it should be remembered, is the first stage of those dangerous renal maladies against which the resources of medical sci ence are too often exhausted in vain. Peril is forestalled by the Bitters, which averts Bright’s disease, diabetes, dropsy, gravel and the trouble arising from a weak bladder. Equally efficacious is it in checking and eradicating malarial.bilious and nervousail- ments, dyspepsia, constipation and rheum atism. Appetite and sleep are improved and convalescence hastened by its beneficent action. Either when health is slightly or seriously impaired, the value of this restor ative preventive medicine is speedily made manifest, “In our state of affairs we demand closest scrutiny and economy in expenditures. We condem the prodigality and excess of Ct legislatures, and call upon the next slative assembly to keep all appropria tions within the limits of the m jsi econom ical administration consisten with effi ciency. The officers of th? dm.nistrative department of the state have become too expensive, and their » xpenses must be re duced. When the constitution fixes the salary, only ihc constitutional salary should be paid, without additional emolu ments. T lie practice of employingunnec essary clerks and of paying fees in excess of ’ust payment for services needed or ren- dere I, has become an abuse that must be cut oi., and we pledge the republican party to the prosecution and accomplishment of this reform. District attorneys and other officials should be paid fixed salaries, since payment of fees encourages litigation and entails upon the taxpayers heavy and need less expense.” _________ For Bringing Him Up. 1 tdro liti.z i.i.s Hied Angus Den at Santa L'arbura £< i $24,0'.>0, alleged to be due for maiutei.r.m c of the defendant for 24 yea: s.
