PERSONAL AND SOCIAL.
The Angle-Stokes Shooting.
John Angle, of Sisson, who was shot
in Sage’s saloon at Mott by Mike Stokes,
on Tuesday night, December 17tb, 1895,
died in Sisson last Saturday morning
from the effects of the wounds inflicted.
The trouble occurred about 11 o’clock.
At the time of the shooting there were
about twenty people in the room, and
although some fourteen Bhots were fired,
fortunately no one was injured excepting
Angle. According to testimony of wit
nesses examined before Justice Walden,
and upon which testimony Stokes was
discharged. Stokes bad gone th Mott
with a party, and was followed by Angle,
who entered the saloon and drew bis
pistol, but was prevailed upon to put it
up, and was asked by Stokes to take a
drink. He soon after drew the pistol
and began firing at Stokes, who returned
the fire with one shot, which entered
Angle’s body just under the shoulder,
He was taken to Sisson, where medical
treatment was rendered, and it was
thought he was not dangerously wound-
ed, baton Saturday morning the wound-
ed man died. Coroner E. H. Scofield
was immediately notified, and left on the
evening train, accompanied by Sten
ographer E. H. Murray. District At
torney Raynes also attended the inquest,
which was held early Sunday morning.
The evidence clearly showed that Angle
was the aggressor, and that Stokes’ shot
was fired in self defense. In accordance
with this testimony, the coroner’s jury
brought in a verdict of justifiable homi
cide. Angle, who was about 32 years of
age, came to Sisson from southern Ore
gon, and has an uncle living in Medford,
also parents living in that vicinity. The
funeral was held at Sisson.—Yreka

A visit with Medford people just now
would make a fellow think Barnum’s
circus had arrived in town. She is in
the throes of political excitement over
the city election, with three distinct
tickets in the field. The present city
government ¡8 accused of having worked
itself into “a ring” and that the main
springs of its Waterbury works has
formed itself in an official junta that has
iu turn worked itself into a kind of bar-
bershop where city scrip sbaviDg, assort

prejudices have been dealt in. Many
citizens didn't like it and denounced the
city administration as being unholy and
nnciean. These people brought their
forces into a citizens convention and de
