Stage Robbers Sentenced. Elda Wood, for holding up and robbing the Roseburg-Coos bay stage August 5th, who was arrested at the Josephine county copper mines Sept. 25th, and later in dicted by the U. S. grand jury at Port land, was convicted, the jury recom mending him to the mercy of the court. W. W. Cardwell defended him. The maximum penalty for his crime is life imprisonment. When the verdict was announced Wood never changed counte nance and betrayed no emotion, taking the matter with stocial indifferance. Adolphus C. Frick, convicted of at tempting to rob the Ager-Klamath Falls stage, was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. Asked if he had anything to say, Frick replied that expected clem ency because be had no real gun, only a cedar bark imitation of a gun, and he had not yet robbed the mail. Judge Bellinger reviewed the case and when he passed sentence Frick drew a long breath as be resumed his seat, which might be taken as an expression that while five years in the “pen” at hard work seemed a long time, it was a good deal shorter than to be compelled to spend his life behind prison walls, and that he fully realized what a “close shaye” it was for him. The cases of John Case and James Poole, indicted fcr robbing the S. P. passenger train and mail in Cow creek canyon July 1st have been arraigned and their trials set for December 18th.
