VOL. VIII.
Killing of B. Simpson at Medford.
PRESSED BRICKS.
Dr. D. M. Brower, coroner of Jackson
county, was called to Medford Saturday
evening and summoned N. R. Johnston,
J. W. Curry, J. I. Hill, C. O. Damon,
Geo. Coulter and Geo. Mickey as a jury
to examine into the cause of the death of
A. H. Simpson, an old resident of Jack-
son county, better known as “B.” Simp
son, who met his death in a peculiar
manner in front of the “West Side
Saloon,” located between the Clarendon
Hotel and the Medford distillery office.
The jury found deceased to be in his 66th
year, a single man and a native of Ken
tucky, and the immediate cause of his
death was “extravasation of blood at the
base of the brain, produced by falling
from the sidewalk while in an intoxicated
condition.” Dr. Waite made the med
ical examination. A little before bis
death Simpsm and a young man named
Bill Ganev got into a wordy combat and
soon got together with a chair and board,
respectively. They were parted by
bystanders, among whom was W. T.
Crane, another young man, a native of
Jackson county. Simpson went into the
ealoon but returned soon and gave Crane
considerable uf a cussing. Crann moved-
his seat to getaway from Simpson, but
the latter’s fighting Kentucky blood was
up and he was after another serap.
Crane arose fretn his seat and with bis
clinched fist landed a blow on Simpson’s
neck, which knocked the old man off the
18 inch elevated porch side walk on the
ground, and in four minutes he was dead.
His head and shoulders in striking the
hard ground, caused a hemorrhage from
the ruptured arteries at base of brain.
Simpson raised his head and Btarted to
get up, but fell back and soon breathed
his last. No blame is attached to Crane
tor being the cause of his death, as the
lick he struck would not in itself have
done any damage.

Arthur Johnson Arrested.
Los Angeles, Aug. 8.—Arthur John
son, a butcher and packer, was arrested
today bv Sheriff Burr on a letter from
Sheriff McFearon, of Albany, Or., charg
ing him with obtaining money by false
pretenses. Neither the sheriff nor the
prisoner knows the specific charge. John
son says he is the son of the late A. H.
Johnson, the millionaire butcher of Port
land, Or., and is one of nine heirs. The
heirs have had a misunderstanding, and
drafts against the estate that bad Dre-
vimslv been honored have been doubted
and returned, some of his, which had
been cashed, being among the number.
He believes his relatives hav« gone into
court, and, as be failed to appear, not
having been subpoenaed, the charge of
obtaining money by false pretenses was
trumped up on those drafts.
Some Interesting Figures.
Of the 1924 railway corporations in the
United States, less than one-half or about
800 of them, are independent operating
companies. Under 1000 of these main
tain separate financial accounts, while
about 840 are operated on a contingent
money rental. The movement of con
solidation has been greater during the
past two years than ever before. Some
thing like 2000 miles were merged, while
about 30 roads were reorganized during
the past 12 months.

The Power of Imagination as Exemplified
In a Dentist’s Chair.
Dentists have a splendid opportunity
of studying tho power of imagination.
An up town practitioner by way of il
lustration told a reporter abont one of
his women patients. She entered, ac
companied by her husband, and point
ing to her swollen face askod the den
tist to extract the offending tooth. He
placed her iu the chair, and taking the
small hand glass which dentists use put
it into her mouth for the purpose of ex
amining the molar which was to be ex
tracted.
The glass had no sooner touched the
tooth than she uttered a frightful scream,1
and, bouncing out of tho chair, rushed
out into the waiting room, crying that
her jaw was broken. The united efforts
of her husband and the dentist were for
some time unable to persuade her that
the tooth was not extracted and that
she could not possibly have been hurt
After examining her mouth with the
aid of a glass she finally became con
vinced that the tooth was still in its
place. Taking her 6eat in the chair
again, she submitted to the operation of
extracting the tooth without a murmur
and expressed her surprise that the pain
was so slight.—New York World.
