Office of the PIONEER PRESS COMPANY, C. W. Hornick, Supt.
St. Paul, Mian., Sept. 7,1S9L—Eureka Chemical & M’f’g Co., La Crosse. Wis.—Dear
Sirs— I have been a tobacco fiend for many years, and during tbe past two years have
smoked from fifteen to twenty cigars regularly every day. My whole nervous sys
tem became affected until my physician told me I must give up the use of tobacco
for the time being, at least. I tried the so-called "Keeley Cure.” "No-To-Bac” and
various other remedies, but without success until I accidentally learned of vour
•‘Baco-Curo.” Three weeks ago to-day I commenced using your preparation and to
day I consider myself completely cured; lamin perfect health and the horrible
craving for tobacco, which every inveterate smoker appreciates, has completely left
me. I consider vour "Baco-Curo” simply wonderful and can fully recommend it.
Yours very truly,
C. W. HORNICK.

NEW VENTILATING DEVICE.
HOW A WESTERN TOWN GREW.
With the Development of Resources Camo
Wealth aud Prosperity.
An Inventor Claims It Will Furify the Air
In the Foulest Room.
Ten years ago if any one had proph
esied that the shanty mining town
in southern Colorado called Durango
would today be the state’s southern
metropolis and a center of culture he
would have justly been laughed at. At
that time Durango was the very center
of tbe deadly cattle feuds between the
outlaw Eldridge band and the cattle
raisers in northern New Mexico. No
business man went out into the streets
without his gun, nor did he do business
unless that same gun was back of the
counter or on his desk. But history once
more repeated itself in the case of Du
rango, and a vigilance committee util
ized several inviting limbs of a huge
pine tree standing in the center of its
main street, and a few of the outlaw
band were sent somewhere in space.
Then tho shanty town girded itself for
a true western hustle. How it succeeded
in ten years is illustrated simply by the
fact that today the trolley cars run over
the ground where the old pine tree stood.
The period from 1874 to 1881 marked
that primitive growth and development
common to the birth of all western
towns. The description of tbe Durango
of today, with its water supplies, its vast
coal deposits, its smelters, ore bodies,
railroads and everything essential to an
individualized “jumping” western city,
would take a guidebook.
Disease germs, which the insanitary
conditions of buildings foster aud mul
tiply by countless millions, need no lon
ger bo feared if the claims of a Chicago
inventor prove true. Tbe invention is
patented and is described as a simple
device for removing foul air and gases
from houses, basements, mines or the
holds of vessels, which the inventor says
will revolutionize the sanitary and ven
tilating systems of the world. The ad
mirable features of the device are its
simplicity and the absolute inexpensive
ness *of its operation. Applied to a base
ment or a house there is no need of an
exhaust fan to be operated by steam or
electric power. By utilizing natural
laws this device is self acting day and
night in all seasons of the year.
“The device, so far as it pertains to
the method,” says the inventor, “de
pends upon a novel application of a
natural law which, so far as I am
aware, has never been utilized practical
ly before. This natural law is that
fluids, when not under pressure or oth
erwise impelled, move from tho locality
of a higher to that of a lower tempera
ture, or, stated more briefly, that air or
any other free fluid will movo from one
point to another when there is a varia
tion of temperature at tho two points.
That is observed in the natural phenom
ena of windstorms di- cyclones. The dif
ference in temperaturo between the
sunny sido of a house and the shady
side will produce an air current suf
ficient to operate my appliance and rid
the entire house of all impure air aud
foul gasos without the aid of any me
chanical power. Thus, you see, after
the first cost of putting in the vontila’
tion, which is very small, there is ab
solutely no further cost for oporation.
“I am particularly anxious to have
my apparatus tested in the publio
schools. So confident am I that it will
purify tho air in tho foulest room with
out exposing the children to a draft that
I am willing to put it in one or two of
the worst ventilated schoolrooms at my
own expense, simply to prove its ef
ficacy. I can put it into the foulest tene
ment house in the city, aud the sicken
ing odors will be removed in a few min
utes, leaving the air pure and sweet
Even the odors from garlic and onions
will be carried out of ths kitchen where
they aro cooking. Of course these claims
seem preposterous, but I have tested
the apparatus thoroughly at my own
house. ”

Parched corn, which, with a sprinkle of
