VOL. VIH.
The San Francisco Examiner’s Oak
land, Cal., news column contains the
following concerning the recently incor
porated railroad that intends also to put
a prong of its system into Klamath Falls:
Councilman J. M. Bassett, the author
of the celebrated “Old Pard” letters, is
one of the incorporators of the California,
Oregon and Idaho railread—a line to
begin at tidewater in Solano county and
run through Solano, Yolo. Colusa, Glenn,
Tehama, Shasta, Lassen and Modoc
counties, and then through Oregon and
i Idaho into XVvoming.
The capital stock, according to the
articles of incorporation filed with the
secretary of state, will be $800,000.
Mr. Bassett says that the capital is
principally from Kansas City, and that
he is acting in the matter for other
parties.
“I believe that these projectors mean
' business,” said Mr. Bassett to-day, “and
I it was on the assurance that the road
would be built that I consented to have
my name used in the matter.
‘'Manufacturers of railroad material are
among the capitalists interested in the
road, and their purpose is to begin and
build right away. That is all I can say
at present, and I am not at liberty to use
the names of the men who are interested.
“The railroad will be independent of
all other lines ami it is a necessity in the
development of that portion of the west.”
Railroads over this road have been pro
posed before, but Mr. Bassett says he
knows that this time the work of con
struction will be immediately commenced
and that the entire road will be built.

JACKSON
COUNTY, OREGON,
Klamath Falls Stage Hold-Up.
The stage from Ager to Klamath Falls
was robbed again last Thursday night.
The stage left the railroad at Acer at 3
o’clock Thursday afternoon. Ed. Walters
was driver and two passengers, John
Wells, a prominent and wealthy Klamath
stockman and populist county commis
sioner of Klamath county, and Emanuel
Cora, a merchant bound home to Picard,
Cal. About 10 o’clock, as the team set
tled down to a slow pull up the narrow
Topsv grade, six miles long, the com
mand came from ambush beside the road
for the driver to hold up and throw out
the express pouch and letter-pouches.
The driver and passengers were then
ordered to dismount. Wells was told to
cut open the letter pouches and, while
he was slashing away at Uncle Satn’s
property with a pocket-knife, the other
passenger was ordered by the robbers to
break open a box supposed to contain
Wells-Fargo’s treasures. The High wav-
man objected, however, to the merchant
making so much disturbance and con
fusion, and bade the driver take an ax
from the stage and make a neater job of
it and with less noise. This work com
pleted, the passengers and driver took off
their coats, at the requeetof the robber,
who was still “out of Bight,” and left the
contents of their pockets with the other
booty. Little was obtained from them,
though. The two passengers and driver
were then permitted to get aboard the
stage again and move on.
It is not known yet that anything was
secured from the express box or letters.
The robbery was within a few hundred
feet of a similar robbery hardly a month
ago, and there is little doubt that it was
executed by the same lone highwayman.
It was carried out in almost the same
manner, the robber giving his orders
from his ambush and was not seen by the
driver or passengers, though his presence
close at hand was as firmly impressed tip-
on them as if he stood at the horses
head and covered them with his gun.
A more favorable place for a stage rob
bery could hardly be selected. It w’as at
the foot of the Tops}’ grade and for sev
eral miles either way there is no human
habitation. Eastward, Topsy station is
at the summit of the grade, six miles
away, while westward there are few
houses nearer than Shovel creek, almost
10 miles back. Heavy timber, rockv ra
vines and mountain wilds surround the
place iu every direction and make it pos
sible for a robber to easily make his es
cape before the officers could be notified.
This route has been a hazardous one
for the Wells-Fargo express for years.
So unprofitable did it become that they
withdrew from it altogether for some
time, but established a serviceon it again
a year or more ago. Since that time,
robberies seem to have been more num
erous than ever. Within a radius of 15
miles or more there live some uncertain
and suspicious characters, and the officers
who have been trying to intercept the
perpetrator ot the recent robberies, are
said to suspect that he is a permanent
resident of that section, but his capture
seems almost impossible, with so many
natural advantages of the country iu bis
favor.

What is an Emulsion? Our New Building is now Completed.
Milk is a true Emulsion, and as milk or cream is
easier to digest and assimilate than butter, so is the
inilk or cream of Cod-liver Oil easier to digest and as
similate than raxv Oil. This is why Scott’s Em .’sion is
much more useful and effective than the maural Oil;
why it accomplishes so much in arresting waste and
building up the body.
But it is much more than ordinary fat
It has
other constituents that have wonderful healing and
strengthening poxver, and in addition we add the Hypo
phosphites (or Phosphorus), another most important
element in overcoming decreased vitality or loss of
flesh. These are the reasons why Scott's Emulsion is
benefiting to-day hundreds of thousands ot consump
