Neuber, indicted some time since for selling liquor on the Central Point fair grounds without a license from the county court, came up Saturday, and was argued on a general demurrer before Judge Hale, of Klamath county, Judge Hanna being related to Neuter’s wife. The case is this: Neuber paid the directors of the southern Oregon state board of agriculture $105 for the ex clusive right to retail liquors on the fair grounds during the fair, and was given a license bv the board for that purpose. He was indicted, and the indictment sets up that he sold liquor in less quantities than one gallon, without first having obtained a license from the county court for that purpose. The contention, as de veloped in the argument upon the de murrer, is to the effect that the indict ment failed to negative the fact that the liquors were not sold within the limits of any incorporation, and is therefore insuf ficient. The case was taken under ad visement. ASHLAND, PRESSED BRICKS. Sack shoes, best in town, at tbe Racket store. W. P. Hardy of Jacksonville has gone to Iowa. Shasta. We are in receipt of a circular from the Secretary of the Mazamaa Society, in Portland Oregon, announcing that the above organization will attempt to send a message by aun flashes from British Columbia to Mexico and back again. The measage will be started on its way on July lOtb. The mountains in Oregon and Washington available for the purpose are, Baker, Rainer, St. Helens. Adams, Hood, Jefferson, Three Sisters, Diamond Peak, Thielsen, Scott and Pitt, and in California, Mounts Shasta, Tellac, Round Top, Dana, Lyell, Stillman, Whitney, Lowe, Baldy, and such other peaks as are necessary to complete the chain. Citizens residing in the vicinity of the various mountains available for the pur pose above suggested are besought to “take a hand” and aid the attempt. “Mazama” is the name of a society of mountain climbers. It was organized on the summit of Mt. Hood, Oregon, on the 19th day of July, 1894, at which time and place the constitution and by-laws were adopted and first officers elected. - The experience of its members of that ( occasion inspires them to further achieve ments. The mountains furnish delight and inspiration which no man or woman ( can know or dream save those who have attained “exaltation” on the hights. There is health, joy and freedom there. THURSDAY. We consider it our proper course to thoroughly commit the Democratic party first. We know that a very large majority of the party is in favor of restoring silver to its old place in the coinage, and we propose to make that fact self evident, and then the silver men will take charge of the party. If the gold standard Democrats stay with us, well and good. There will be no need of a new party. If they do not, we can get along without them. Men who have not had experience have but little idea of the potency of a party name and organization or of the great difficulty of getting up a new organiza tion. His doc trine is that the silver question is but for a day, but Democracy is etornal. The silver Republicans respond to all questions with a dry smilo and a gen eral statement that there is no hurry. Just at present the current tends among them toward a silver Republican move ment, with Senator Don Cameron or Senator Teller as the candidate. The fusionists would prefer Bland or Sibley and ridicule the claim that Pennsylvania could be won with Cameron. “Whenever,” says one of this class, “Pennsylvania votes for any system which does not give her power to tax the rest of tho country for her benefit, why, the millennium will be at hand and we shan’t need any silver.” Mr. Sibley very frankly says that he does not feel himself competent to bo a first class candidate, which is a little remarkable in view of tho fact that ho was nomi- ated by a fusion of Domccrats, Popu lists and Prohibitionists in a district where ho did not reside and won a tremendous victory. In the west tho radical Populist edi tors aro up in arms against fusion and havo sent down a committee to over haul their representatives both in con gress and out. There are in tho United States at least 1,700 Populist panels, and The National Watchman hero lias over 1,100 exchanges which aro straight- out. Tho editor, Mr. Dunning, says, however, that “owing to various mis chances tho management of the recent meeting fell into tho hands of tho most radical, and less than 100 papers were really represented in tho movement of denunciation, if it may bo called such. ” Colonel Milton Park of Dallas, Tex., is probably the most outspoken and rad ical representative of those opposed to fusion and in favor of adhering strictly to the Omaha platform. Ho is confident that tho Populists can elect the next president and says there will be but two candidates, as Democrats and Republic ans will fuse on a gold basis platform. J. H.
