Death of Wm. Kahler.
Wm. Kahler of Jacksonville, who waa
struck with paralysis last week died
Thursday evening and was buried along­
side his wife in the Jacksonville cemetery
Saturday afternoon, tbe Masonic lodge
and M. E. church couductimz the serv­
ices, with preaching by Rev. W. B. Moore
and Presiding Elder Jones. He came to
Jackson county in 1852 and has been one
of its most active and influential citizens.
Ho was the father of C. W. Kahler and
Rev. Dr. Geo. Kahler, and left a good
sized private fortune,

in southern California visiting her father,
W. Fowler, who is very low.
The only change so far, made at the
Roseburg soldiers’ home was the election
of W. H. Byars commandant.

A MODOC WAR INCIDENT.
Death of Edward Fox, who secured
an Interview with Capt. Jack for
the N. Y. Herald.
Edward Fox, who will be remembered
by the old-timers of Klamath county as
the correspondent of tbe New York
Herald during the Modoc war, was
drowned on March 4th in tbe Swan
river, Perth, West Australia.
The name of Edward Fox became well
known on both sides of the Atlantic dur­
ing the Coleman Dravton-Barrowe scan­
dal in 1892. Fox acted as one of the
seconds in the duel that did not come oil
in Paris and furnisbedYhe famous corre
spendence to a prominent New York
paper. Fox claimed that the publication
of the letter waa under tbe sanction of
Barrowe, which the latter denied. The
lie waa passed and tbe outcome of the
dispute was a bloodless duel between
Fox and Barrowe on April 23, 1892, at
Nieuwport Barns, a seaside resort near
Ostend. After firing two shots each at
twelve paces they retired witboat shak­
ing hands or passing Che compliments
usual on such occasions. Fox’s fiist
shot whistled by Bsrrowe’s ear while
Barrowe’s last ballet tore- through Fox’s
frock coat near tbe hip bone, piercing
the coat in three different places and
grazing his trousers over his abdomen.
Fox was not, as he has been described
an Englishman and ex-officer of the
Guards, but an Irishman and an ex­
officer of an English line regiment. The
original family name was O’Shanagh,
which means son of or descendant of tbe
fox, and the dan was located in County
Cavan. He was educated in England,
and entered the army as an ensign at 18
years of age, spending most of his time
in England or abroad. He was a big,
broad-shouldered, deep-chested man fully
six feet tall.
His father not being rich, and he
being a younger son, he was almost en­
tirely dependent on bis pay as a subal­
tern, and bis tastes being expensive, he
soon accumulated a very creditable
amount of debts. Life became a burden
to him and he was obliged to "sell out,”
the purchase system being then in vogue
in tbe British army. The “fortune”
which he is said to have brought to
America, where he came after leaving
the army, waa tbe few hundred pounds
| sterling realized by the sale of his com­
mission. He went straight to Wall
i street, where he lost every penny of it
and liought a very valuable experience
rather dearly.
He had to do aomething for a living
and having met James Gordon Bennett,
Jr.,
then a young man, and having some
'
literary ability which he himself was
unaware of until he needed it, he became
reporter on the Herald. He soon devel­
oped into a first-class newspaper man,
and got the best assignments on the
paper, both in New York and out of town.
Although a bon yivant, and having the
entree to what is called tbe “best society”
in New York, he was not by any meanB
a dissipated man. But he moved in a
fast set. and, although he earned a good
salary as a “space” man, he was always
in need of money.
His principal feat in jeurnalism was
when he was correspondent of the Her­
i ald with General Canby in the Modoc
war. Bennett wanted an interview with

the
advice of General Canby and every
< officer whom he consulted, he determined
I to take his life in bis band, and go into
1 the lava beds, accompanied only by an
interpreter.
He managed in some way
'
that he never revealed to convey his
pacific intentions to the Indians and to
publish their grievances, and he was
allowed to go in among them, heard
Capt. Jack’s statement and published it.
There was no doubt about the genuine­
ness of the interview. That was the
origin of the soubriquet, “Modoc Fox,”
which stuck to him for many years.

A telegram from St. Paul, Minn., says
that the price of beef has gone up within
the past few davs. from 2 to

that confidence is being reatored, and

don and Russel Sage to corroborate its
statement. It seems to be a fact that
there has been a slight rise in prices of
products recently. What is the cause of
it? We will quote from the Associated
Press dispatches taken from the columns
of the Portland Evening Telegram. In
its issue of March 11, 1895 we find the
