Roseburg Plaindealer.] The case of the United States vs. Joel V. Warne, Julius E. Miner, and Reuben S. Goodfellow, which has been on trial in the United States land office here since July 39th, is still dragging its weary length along, and though occupying nine davs in the taking of its evidence the government has not yet finished one case, and from present indications Sun day morning will come before the end oi the government’s case. This being one of fifty-three cases, at this rate two years and more will be required for their trial. Of course, these cases are important to this section for it is a matter of great im portance to the development of this country that these timber lands are taken up and tbeir great wealth of timber con verted into lumber. Mr. JuliusE. Miner has had a number of witnesses here, and though claiming to have acted in the ut* most good faith be is certainly aiskMectod to an enormous exoense in defenaiwg hit title. The evidence has developeo*the fact that Mr. Miner is the heaviest tax payer in Jackson county and since pur chasing this land the people have been enabled to open three new public schools, and if he is successful, we are informed there will be large mills erected and the Qf course, country will be de we know nothing its of this timber ca*e, but we lands can only be developed by outside capital, and that our timber interests an and always have been a source of great wealth to western Oregon, when devel oped. Mysterious Disappearance of Dick Wise. The Klamath Falls Express reports the mysterious disappearance of Preston R. Wise, from Klamath Hot Springs, on the evening of August 1st, when be obtained a horse from Manager Geo. B. Stiles, oi the hotel, and rode to the residence of James George, at which place he made his will, informing George that he ex pected to be killed witbin two days by certain neighbors who had threatened to put him out of the way within that time. His property, consisting of a ranch and persoual effects, he willed to his only daughter, Effie, who, a few months ago married Bert Hessig, much against tLt father’s wishes. Wise left George’s place late in the evening, returned with the horse to the Springe, and then went to Owen’s place, where he spent the night. Early Thursday morning he left, telling Will Owen that he was going to his ranch to repair his fences. Since that hour Wise has not been seen. Foul play has been suspected, while there are others who believe he has skipped to avoid dis closures in the mysterious murder of Chas. Spence, who was found dead in the Klamath riyer with a bullet hole in his head. It is also recalled that an Ed. ReeveB came near fatally stabbing hit son-in law, Bert Ilessig, a few weeks ago. ________________ A Man’s Advertisement for a Wife. ASHLAND, OREGON. Chief of the County Papers. ABSOLUTELY PURE BERMUDA SKETCHES. Lonely Vigil of a California Miner "With the Corpse of a Friend. Last Sunday morning, says the News, the people of Crescent City were some what startled by an announcement made hv T. C. Raymer, who had been out in the hills prospecting recently with J. L. Varied Phases of Social Life and Pleasure There. [Special Correspondence.] H amilton , Bermuda, April 30.—The Smith, of Cebat, ArizonaTerritorv. Sun day morning early Mr. Raymer left Mr. Smith in camp and went on a short bunt ing expedition. On his return to camp he found the dead body of Mr. Smith lving upon the fire. It seems that Mr. Smith was subject ts heart troubles, and •luring the absence of his friend was seized with a spasm and fell backward in to th« fire, which waejnifoiaz briskly. Mr. Raymer was absen"nout an hour, and it is presumed that the dead man had been in the fire tor sometime, as the body was burned to a char. Mr. Raymer extinguished the fire, as he supposed, and covered the dead body with a blanket, and started cut to the nearest neighbor for help. At Big Flat he was unable to secure assistance, so he continued his tramp toward town. Upon reaching Cantbock ford be saw Mr. Lam bert, who was induced to go to his camp ind remain with the body while he came i into Crescent City. When Mr. Lambert reached the scene he found everything on fire—tent, blankets and working im plements were in a mass of flames—and, worse than all. the dead bodv find re ignited. Mr. Lambert put out the fire as best he could, and remained two nights with the corpse. Mr. Raymer reached Crescent City Sunday, and notified the coroner, who deputized Justice James McNulty to hold an inquest. The body was buried near the scene of the disaster. Mr. Smith was a native of England, 55 years of age. sight that greeted my gaze upon com ing on deck after those three woeful days spent in the seclusion of my cabin drove every unpleasant recollection from my mind. The profession of green trop ical foliage scudding past us on the shores of theso 3C5 islands, the wonder ful radiance of the bright blue sky and the soft, balmy springness in the air afforded a marvelous contrast to the Weather we liad left behind us in New York only 05 hours before. Later, upon inquiry, I was told that on account of the warmth of the climate and the total absence of ice—except in the largest hotels, which manufacture their own—it was found always neces sary to give interment the day after death. Since it would be impossible to procure mourning at such short notice, it has become tho custom of the island ers to borrow from one anothei- the req uisite habiliments for the funeral. It will be remembered that Bermuda is one of England’s most powerful strongholds, second only to Gibraltar in being tho strongest fortified place in the world, and therefore tho military and naval society ranks among the highest to be found in any of the British posses sions, the finest regimentsand battleships being sent out from “home” to protect this important station. It is curious how faithfully the British colonists speak of “home.” Even those of them who have never been to England, and whoso an cestors for generations have never set foot there, always speak of the mother land as “home. ” Prince George of England, now Duke of York, with his late lamented broth er, tho Duke of Clarence, passed several months in Bermuda during the winter of 1891. Tho loyal hearted, hospitable Bermudans vied with ono another in good natured Efforts to give the royal guests a good time.
