The First to Go.
A Distressing Accident.
Last Monday morning at 3 o’clock a.
m. an engine with Roadmaster Burck-
halter and Deputy Sheriff Frank Wil­
liams went over as far as Hornbrook to
inspect the track over the mountains as
it had been reported that the track was
torn up in several places. They found
the road in good shape, no damage hav­
ing been done. They returned the same
evening.
The first regular train from the south
for three weeks arrived this morning at
3 o’clock, bringing in the delayed mails
and express, also a squad of eight militia­
men from Stockton under command of
Capt. Murray, who came over the mount­
ains to look at the scenery. They return­
ed by this morning’s train, having first
deposited their arms in the baggage car.
A squad of twelve remained at Cole’s
station to keep an eye on Pilot rock.
Two companies of regulars are stationed
at Dunsmuir to keep the strikers in sub­
jection. The trains will likely run from
now on without further molestation.
Mrs. H. C. Myer and Mrs. Geo. R.
Gallant, wife of the tinsmith, were re­
turning yesterday afternoon from Soda
Springs in a one-horse bnggy. At the
Dunn farm a hand of pigs lying in the
road frightened the horse so that he be­
came so unmanageable as to run away
and kick the buggv into a thousand piec­
es. Mrs. Myer succeeded in jumping
out and escaping any serious injuries,but
Mrs. Gallant, who was doing the driving,
was unable to keep out of the wreck and
was seriously injured. Her left leg
above the ankle was broken off, just
banging on by the skin.
Drs. Parson and Brower later in the
evening amputated the foot a few inches
above the ankle.
The Horse Struck.
Charley Spray, a young man who lives
in the eastern portion of town, while
handling a vicious horse laBt Tuesday
met with quite a serious accident The
horse, rearing, struck him down and
dragged him quite a distance, fracturing
the collar bone. The fracture is not nec­
essarily dangerous. It is one the doctors
call a “good case.” Dr. Brower render­
ed the regular medical assistance. The
voung man is a professional teamster,
and has handled horses all his life. He
makes a living by hauling wood, hay and
other commodities, and can ill afford to
lose the time necessary for his recovery.
The runaway horse after getting away
from him coursed up Main street and
finally collided with Tom McAndrew’s
team, which was en route to the moun­
tains.
Vally Inlow followed the run­
away and secured him near J. L. Grubb’s
farm, two miles east of town. The horse
is a Dew comer to this country and is not
acquainted with western ways.
