Water Right Sold to City.
The West Ashland Ditch Co. have
made arrangements with the Ashland
city council whereby they will give the
city a deed to their water right, etc., in
consideration of $3400 to lie paid to the
city in water rents from the city water
works within the next eight years, mak-
ing $72 worth of water for the 34 share
owners in tbe ditch company; all these
privileges to cease after July 1, 1902.
The West Ashland Ditch Co. have a
water right of 100 inches, and 25 inches
during the low water mark of the waters
of Ashland creek. Their water right is
35 years old and their ditch supplied
Ashland w ith its water for years until the
city water system was built, and has ever
since supplied tbe stockholders of the
company with the water they consumed.
The city council will have the deed made
out and signed in a short while.
This is a very important matter and
we hope tho members of the citv council
have investigated the matter thoroughly
and completely with all the probable anil
possible contingencies that may arise.
There are so many people ready to mon
key the public that our city dads should
look into all tbe phases of the situation
very carefully.

A large number of farmers were in town
Saturday, and as a consequence “the
little green bugs in the wheat” were dis
cussed thoroughly. Opinions concern
ing them differed greatly, and while
some thought the wheat crop would be
ruined by the insects, others were of the
opinion that their visitation would result
in no injury. The insects are provided
with wings, which they are using to good
effect ¡ d some sections, inasmuch as they
are flying away from the wheat field as
soon as their wings are fully matured.
It appears that no damage has thus far
resulted, but how so many bugs can be on
a head of wheat without causing more or
less damage is more than they can
understand, and consequently they con
tend that later in the season the damage
caused by the bugs will show itself. The
following letter is self explanatory:

Sir: Your favor of the 16th has been re
ferred to me for answer. The insects you
send are the grain aphis (aphis evenal), and
it has occasionally proved a very bad pest
in eastern states. If not checked by late
rains, which is not likely, or by minute
parasites, which is quite possible, it may
increase to such an extent as to prevent
grain from maturing, and hence be very
destructive.
As regards remedies, there is no practical
remedy which can be applied now. Spray
ing the wheat with a weak kerosene emul
sion will kill them, but it is hardly to be
thought of in a large acreage. But as soon
as the wheat is harvested burn all the stub
ble and straw and litter weeds and waste in
or upon the fields.
