VOL. VII.
Roseburg Plaindealer.]
Aaron Rose, through his attorney, W.
W. Cardwell, has commenced suit against
H. Wollenberg to recover $4003.55. Mr.
Rose claims that he was liable for but
one-third of the amount of Arrington’s
defalcation, whereas he paid one-half.
He has therefore brought suit for the
recovery of the difference, which is
$4003.55, as stated above.

The little city of Corvallis recently had
a bit of a shooting scrape, in which most
all the citizens took a hand. The cause
of the riot was the taking of one Ed.
Scott, a local “bad man.” The night
watchman having arrested him for dis
orderly conduct, was marching him to
the “cooler,” when auddently the arrestee
pulled from his coat pocket a dangerous
weapon, and commenced to pump lead at
theofficer, who called for help. The call
was promptly responded to; everybody
who had a gun commenced arguing with
the miscreant. Fifteen shots were fired,
and nobody hit. The culprit was finally
safely landed in the city jail, with a sore
head, but unshot; the fainting women
were restored to consciousness, and the
hamlet was once more at peace.

UNITED IN DEATH.
Two Foolish Young Alleghany Girls Take
the I’oison Route to tlio Beyond.
“I have kept my promise to the dead.”
With this exclamation Jennie McDon
ald, the 15-ycar-old daughter of James
McDonald of Alleghany, fell unconscious
into the doorway of her father's house.
Dr. Griffiths was hastily summoned. He
saw the girl was suffering from a poison
ous drug and administered an antidote.
It had no effect, however, and she died
in less than 30 minutes.
Miss McDonald was the school “chum”
of Mamie Hippie, the 15-year-old daugh
ter of Dr. Hippie, who committed sui
cide on Tuesday by taking a dose of acid
because her mother scolded her for play
ing truant. Instead of being at school
the two girls attended the performance
at a museum.
While on her deathbed Mamie ex
pressed a desire to see Jennie alone. The
girls had an interview. Jennie refused
to tell her parents what it was about.
They did not press her. When the funeral
of Mamie took placo, among the mourn
ers were the McDonald family. Upon
their arrival home Mr. McDonald tried
to learn the secret between his daughter
and the dead girl. She refused to di
vulge it, saying she would die before giv
ing it up. Her father did not press the
point.
After supper Jennie said she would
retire early and went to her room. In
stead of going to bed she got out the bot
tle that had contained the poison Mamie
Hippie used to kill herself, and which she
had secreted, and stole out of the house.
Going to a drug store, sbo had the vial
refilled. On her way home she drank a
quantity of the stuff. As she reached
tne door of her father’s house she sank
unconscious on the step. Her father is
sure the secret the girl had was a solemn
promise made to her “chum” to follow
her in death.—Pittsburg Correspondence.
