ASHLAND, JACKSON COUNTY, OREGON, THURSDAY. JUNE 7, 1894. VOL. VII. NO. 4. ___ A Klamath County Storm. One of the heaviest, swiftest storms that ever visited this section fell upon our loose buildings, trees and gardens Friday evening. The editor’s woodshed, Woodcock’s new barn and several other buildings in the pathway of the first gust, went down ker-smash. The rain was swept in swift torrents upon the earth, beating down vegetation' and scattering the grass blades, buds and shoots in all directions. On the Skillethandle on the upper lake the devastation was awful. Every large tree up there was blown down, leaving acres of great roots stand ing up like mud-walls above deep holes now filled with water. Mr. Lincoln’s family, who live sixty yards from the timber, were in danger of lite and limb while the air was full of great flying limbs of pine and hemlock. It was a storm that will not soon be forgotten in Klamath.—Star. Alan ¡fold Disorders Are occasioned by an impure and im poverished condition of the blood. The senate bribery investigation com- mittce liegan a secret inquiry into the connection of the sugar trust with tariff legislation. E. J. Edwards, author of the Holland letter in the Philadelphia Press, was be fore the committee for several hours. It is known he presented his written memorandum giving some of the sources of the information contained in his let ter. He declined to state his authority for the information that Secretary Car lisle appeared liefore the tariff sub-com mittee (Jones, Vest and Mills) before the original senate bill was reported, and in sisted that sugar be given protection, because of party pledges made before the election, or for the statement that Carlisle himself had revised and had written the sugar schedule. This sched ule, as prepared by Carlisle, he said was still in existence, and the fact could be definitely ascertained by summoning the members of the finance committee. The other statements, the authority for which Edwards declined to give, were that $500,000 was contributed by the sugar trust to the Democratic campaign fund of 1892, and members Moore and Seley (who he said were Senator Brice's brokers) had been in possession of the latest amendment to the tariff bill, when Voorhees still insisted that no amend ment had been agreed to. This firm, he said, had a representative in Washing ton to whom amendments were handed. Edwards stated that, according to his information, money had not been con tributed directly to the national com mittee, but given to other organizations. Nor was his information positive that the sugar trust, as such, made a con tribution. It may have been through individuals with the understanding that in base of success the trust should be protected against damaging legislation. He instanced the statement by Governor Waller of Connecticut before the inves tigating committee of that state that wealthy men of New York contributed $100,000 toward Democratic success in Connecticut. Edwards said half had been contributed by Havemeyer and half by E. C. Benedict. He said it was notorious that the leading members of the Democratic party in Colorado had been in consultation with wealthy Dem ocrats of New York prior to the elec tion. An event almost without precedent is to take place at Manchester, N. J. ,when Sheriff Chalmers will sell to the highest bidder the whole town of Manchester— its railroad shops, churches, schools, stores, residences—all but the citizens. This is the result of the action of the Mutual Life Insurance company of New ark in foreclosing the mortgage held on the entire town. The mortgage was given by John Torrey, now deceased, in January, 1807. Mr. Torrey, who was a New York financier, practically founded Manchester, buying up many thousand acres of land and laying out the town. For more than 20 years the mortgage seems to have been hidden away some where, and the people forgot all about it and the property was bought and sold freely. Many of the house holders are employed in the shops of tho Central Railroad company and the foreclosure will prove an especially hard blow to them. : I ___ - . -. .. GENERAL NEWS.
