.4 VALLEY RECORD. VALLEY RECORD. ------- THE FINEST------- NO MONOPOLY PRICES THE WEAKEST SPOT in your whole system, perhaps, is the liver. If that doesn’ t do its work of puri fying the blood, more troubles come from it than you can re member. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery acts upon this weak spot as nothing else can. It rouses it up to healthy, natural action. By thoroughly purifying the blood, it reaches, builds up, and invigorate» every part of the system. For all diseases that depend on the liver or the blood—Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Bilious ness ; every form of Scrofula, even Con sumption (or Lung-scrofula) in its earlier stages: and the most stubborn Skin and Scalp Diseases, the “Discovery” is the only remedy so unfailing and effective that it can be guaranteed. If it doesn't benefit or cure, you have your money back. On these terms, it's an insult to your in telligence to have something else offered as •‘just as good.” 'VQ'L. VII. HON. CHAS. Nathan Pierce, the People’s Party nominee tor governor of the state of Ore gon, resides at Milton, Umatilla county. He was born April 24. 1837, in Gibson county, Indiana, and comes ot sterling New England stock. His education was such as could be had in the common schools ot his native state, supplemented by a term at Franklin Institute, a college situated near Indianapolis. In early manhood he taught school in Gibeon, Pike and Davis counties, Indiana. While teaching in Pike in September, 1861, the call for volunteers to go to the front found him ready, and he laid aside the ferule, shouldered the musket and marched with Company I, Forty-second Indiana infantry, to the scene of action. Colonel J. B. Jones was the the com mander of this regiment, afterward Colonel Denby, recently minister to China, was in command, and then T. B. McIntyre was the colonel. Mr. Pierce was in active service with his regiment until the battle of Murfreesborough, or Stone river, in Tennessee, rising to the rank of second sergeant. In this sharp engagement be was struck by a rebel ininie ball and so badlv injured as to be incapacitated for further service. He was wounded December 31, 1863, and remained in the hospital at Murfees- borough until the spring of 1864, when he was honorably discharged from the service because of his wound. On his return hbme to Indiana be taught school during the winter of 1864-65, and in the latter year started across the plains to Montana, where he worked in the mines till 1868. He came to Umatilla county in the fall of 1868, and again taught school in 1868 and 1869. In 1870 be lo cated on 160 acres of government land and earned enough money splitting rails to fence and somewhat improve it. He has been engaged in farming ever Bince 1870 and is now the possessor of a 900 acre ranch and owns an interest in the Peacock roller mills, at Milton, an enter prise of which he is one of the origin ators. He also farms some land which he has rented from the Indians on the Umatilla reservation, but owing to the low price of wheat bis farming opera tions have resulted rather disastrously of of late. After the war Mr. Pierce was given a pension by the U. S. government because of the wound received at the battle of Murfreesborough, but in 1879 he relinquished his pension and has not drawn any stipend from the government since that year. For several years past Mr. Pierce has been active in organizing the farmers of the state of Oregon for mutual benefit and protection into the farmers’ alliance, of which until recently he was state president, and thus became widely and favorably known throughout Oregon. He has also been one of the most useful men in the state in organiz ing the people’s party, and much of its present strength as a political party is due to his untiring and zealous efforts. Several years ago he was instrumental with others in founding and publishing the Alliance Herald; and though he is no longer interested in or connected with this enterprise, he takes a lively interest in its welfare and prosperity, fully realiz ing that education in governmental poli cies is a prime need of the people. ------------ --------------- lieturn no More.
