A recent decision at San Bernardino declaring a Sunday-closing ordinance unconstitutional has caused the better class of people in that city to sign and Circulate a petition asking for the pass age of a sweeping Sunday-closing ordi nance that will not be open to the ob jection of special legislation. Mayor Carlson of San Diego has re moved from office the entire board of public works anil has called- a special Session of the council to pass on the new board which the mayor will present to the council. The trouble is all about a street the board is grading through Rose canyon, several miles north of the city, work on which the mayor ordered dis continued, but no attention was paid to his order. The country through which the San Diego. Yuma and Phoenix Railroad com pany will run is said to be not only rich but beautiful. For 90 miles the grade of the line will in no case exceed 20 feet to the mile. The ancient canal system Of New river, over B.otX) miles in length, it one of the wonders of that magnifi cent region, in which there is not a settler. Johnny Adams of Yager. Wash. 12 year» old. was on his way home from school with his sister when a storm arose and the wind uprooted a big fir tree by the roadside close by the girl. The boy, who was a short distance ahead, saw that the tree was likely to fall upon his sister, and running back quickly caught her and pushed her out of the way, but was himself caught bv the falling trunk and so badly crushed that ho died a few hours afterward. A gambling house on Market street, San Francisco, was robbed by two men a few nights since. The men entered th,e place with drawn revolvers and fathered up about $4,000 and started to mn. Obe of them was Captured. In their flight the thieves dropped a num ber of $20 pieces on the sideyalk. News boys and messenger boys swarmed about the place and picked up the coins while the officers were pursuing the robbers. The one captured is William Paulsell, son of the late harbor commissioner, A C. Paulsell. A passenger train was derailed at Ros- •oe, near Los Angeles, by two masked robbers the other night. The engineer noticed that the switch at Roscoe was open, but could not stop the train in time to prevent a derailment. The en gine and two carloads of oranges left the track. The fireman and an unknown tramp were killed. As soon as the en gine jumped the track two men ran to the aide of the tender and covered the engineer with guns. The robbers then fired a volley along the side of the train to keep the trainmen and passengers from alighting. A brakeman was forced to accompany the robbers to the express car and compelled him to place two dy namite bombd against the door. After shattering the door the robbers entered the express car and forced the messen ger to give up the contents of the safe. The robbers esewed They secured about $20.000. Feb. 17. During the first part of the day Bland vainly endeavored to secure a closure on the seigniorage bill. Eulogies on the late Representative Lilly of Pensylvania occupied most of the day and caused an early adjournment. Monday, Feb. 19.
