It does not act like a stimulant, Imparting fictitious strength from which there must follow a reaction of greater weakness tbaa before, but in the most natural way Hood 's Sarsaparilla overcomes that tired feel ing, creates an appetite, purifies the blood, and. in short, gives great bodily, nerve, mental and digestive strength. "The B4<M>d te tbe Lflte." Tbs congress just adjourned baa spent • round billion of dollar». It baa thus aslvsd the problem that had confronted tbe nation lor twelve yesrs—“What shall we do with the .urplua ”’ Run* the ol 1 saying, and everything that ever makes part of any organ of the body must reach it« place therein through tbe blood. Therefore, if the blood ia purified and kept in good condition by the use of Hood’« Sarsaparilla, it necesxarilv follows that tbe benefit of tbe medicine is imparted to every part of the body. Can anything be simpler than tbe method by which this excellent medicine gt~es good health to all who will try it fairly and patiently? Better Tbaa a Gold Mine. WHERE PROTECTION FAIL« Tfle country 0“ never seen a Ume. perhaps*. when there was such an abun dance of evidence to show that protection cannot guarantee “steady work and high wages.” That high tariff organ, The Boston Commercial Bulletin, furnishes tbe following two items, placing them together: Gan. John M. Palmer waa elected sen ator from Illinois, two of the grangers voting with the Democrats Palmer ia tbe K bcobd ’ s candidate for president. if Governor Pennoyer stands no ahow of tbe nomination. The naw. of frequent turbulent meet ing. in Ireland lead, one to believe that Green Erin ia getting too much Home Bule at present. Thu variety of brand, causes a confusion at ideas that even a etout blackthorn fail, to clear up. The Rt. The longest all rail route in the world, we believe. A close observer remark.: Nine- tenths of the saloon keepers are either total abstainer, or very abstemioua drink ers. It is also remarked that lawyers are seldom found in court aa plaintiffs or de fendants, and that physicians take very little medicine. Whereupon a wag sug gests: “If suckers would atop biting long enough to conaider theae facts they would be better off. ’’ The blessings that come to an honest, cuuatotent democrat are many. Uncle Jesse Wilson, who died at Medford last week in hia 96th year, waa born in Vir ginia. Being a staunch democrat,,he cast hia flrat ballot for Thomae Jefferson lor president and the democratic nomi- neea lor that office ever eince. He waa a hardworking man, of temperite habits, and the father of five generations. Sockteaa Simpson, the hayseed eon- greasman from Kansas, was asked by a Washington lady tbe other day if it was tree that be did not wear socks. Mr. bimpeon bad his nerve with him and re plied. “Madam, I believe in the doc trine <rf reciprocity. If you will ahow me your socka I will show you mine.” “Oh, my!” exclaimed the lady, and fled. Yet tbe world must admit that Mr. Himpeon had a keener sense of propriety than tbe lady.—Ex.____ Sir. Chaa. Dilke, who retired from poli ties fire years ago by the revelations of a divorce scandal, has concluded to return and is out with a pamphlet showing that be waa innocent of the charges. March 2d was the KkMb anniversary of the death of John \\ eeley, the founder of Methodism Some one has said: “A greater poet may arise than Milton, a greater theologian than Calvin, a greater pbitoaoplier than Bacon, but a more dis tinguished revivalist than Wesley, nev er.” He was the great revivalist, and he set hia character on the church of which he waa the founder. Everywhere the i Methodism have been great revivalists. It has been for a hundred year» the dis tinguishing feature of the sect. That he should have left on thousands upon thou sands of people for a centurv the im press of his personality is sufficient evi dence of hia greatness. There are Luth- urane and Calvinists, but the iinprees of a distinctive personality are not ao firm ly impressed on either.' Tbe Oregonian ia not always in sympa thy with tbe present administration. CHEMINANT, Secretary. Office No. 801 Ma-ket street (Flood Build- I ing), Room 37, San Francisco, Cal. Tbe rolling mill and pipe works at Scottdale, Pa., have been closed down indefinitely, as have been also the Char lotte furnace and coke works. About 10,000 men are out of employment in Scottdale alone. The Frick company has also shut down nearly 1,900 ovens. Tbe officials of the Illinois Steel com pany give the following reasons why the rolling mills at South Chicago, Dis., have been shat down. They say: "We are try ing to set tie a scale of wages with tbe men for the coming year, and want time to adjust it We have been negotiating with tbe men for ten or fifteen days in regard to the wages, and I can’t tell how long it will be before we arrange the entire scale. We will be obliged to make some reduction in wages, as the mills in the east have done so, and we want to meet tbe difference.” The Illinois com pany’» mills have generally been shot down at this season for repair». This statement that the wages of steel rail workers have been reduced is of in terest in view of the facts brought out in the senate debate on the steel rail tariff last summer. A dispute having arisen as to the difference between the labor cost of making steel rails in America and in Europe, an inquiry on the subject was sent to Carroll D. Wright, United States labor commissioner. He reported that the labor cost in one ton of rails in Europe is 111.82 and in America <11.59, a differ ence of twenty-seven cents. In hia let ter to Senator Carlisle, moreover, Mr. Wright made the following striking statement: “You will pardon me if I call your at tention to one analytical feature which should be observed in the use of the analysis herewith forwarded. Labor cost in one ton of steel rails—I mean af ter all the materials have been assembled in the steel rail works and are ready to be subjected to the proper manipulations for the production of standard steel rails —should be less per ton relatively in this country than in Great Britain or on the continent, because American producers ot standard steel rails dispense with at least one expensive process still adhered to by the foreign producer; and further more, our materials, ore, etc., are purer than those used in most other places; so the quantity of ore, for instance, required for the production of a ton of standard steel rails is less in this country than in other places, and of course the labor re quired to produce one ton of steel rails is, so far as the purer materials are con cerned. less here than abroad.” To cover the difference of twenty seven cents a ton the two houses of our high protective congress put a duty of <13.44 a ton on steel rails. The price of rails is now <24 a ton in England and <28 in the United States. The American railmakers are now consolidated into only six or eight establishments, and they have a practical monopoly of the home market. The shutdown of the Chicago concern is not the only evidence that the steel rail makers are not getting all that high protection promised. The great steel rail king of this country is Andrew Car negie. The following interesting news item has recently been printed: “Five hundred employes in Carnegie’s steel work» at Bradford. Pa.. have struck for the advance iu wages which was prom ised before the McKinley bill was passed, but has since been indefinitely post poned.” Here is another from a Philadelphia paper: The Edgar Thomson Steel works of Carnegie Brothers <fc Co. (limited) have again broken their phenomenal record at rail making. An output of 1,441 gross tons of rails in twenty-four boon is now the record, the best previous perform ance having been 1,417 tons. The best day’s work by any other mill is said to be 1,312 tons. The difference between the price in England and America, as above given, ia <4 a ton, which would be <6.784 on Carnegie’s one day'» output. To insure Carnegie againet the competition of the cheaper English rails the McKinleyitea imposed a tariff of <18.44 a ton, which, on Carnegie's 1,441 tons, would amount to a tariff protection of <19,366.04. How beautiful a thing it is for brethren to dwell together in unity and tax them selves to make millionaires! " Last spring I was completely fagged out My strength left me and I felt sick and mis erable all the time, so that I could hardly attend to my business. I took oue bottle of Hood's Sarsaparilla, and it cured me. There is nothing like it.” R. C.
