VALLEY RECORD.
Deep girdles, well boned after the
peasant bodice, are put on the new toilets
of white and figured silk.
The most stylish sleeve is the full
bishop, made with a loose slip wristlet
one inch wide and banded just above
the elbow with a two inch ribbon.
Shot alpacas are deservedly fashion­
able. The finer mokes are silky, and
resist wear as only alpaca can. A very
tasteful drees is of old rose alpaca, shot
with white.
As many as three and five rows of
tiny buttons are seen on bodices, and
they are also plentifully on cuffs, collars
and coat tails. These coat tail basques
will be the thing for all fall suits.
The reefer coat is made of bine serge
«nd lined throughout with a bright
«dared silk, which is seen on the turn­
over collar. It is double breasted and
there are two rows of brass buttons
down the front.

Aurora. Or., Sept. 25.—There was a j
I serious wreck on the Southern Pacific
' road at this place this morning, and it I
was only by tne merest chance that there '
was no serious los« of life. The overland '
train on the Southern l’acific, which is I
due at Portland at 10:3u o’clock this fore-,
noon, passed here on time, and as the ‘
train hauled out a freight which was side ,
tracked broke in the middle by the pull­
ing out of the shackle bar and started to i
hack down grade.

Escridge stood at the switch, and as he
saw the rear end of the freight coming he
last his bead ami threw over the switch
before the rear ear of the passenger bad
passed. This threw that car, the draw­
ing-room car Santa Rosa, off the track, and
as it hnniped over the sleepers Conductor
M. Young pulled the lx-)l-rope to stop the
triin. On came the wild freight, without
a brakeman to stop its inad course. In
an instant it < rashed into the car Santa
Roca, wrecking the rear end of that car,
throwing the caboose, No. 550, off the
track, and smashing the freight ear. No.
SKNiO, which was filled with a general as- I
sortnient of freight.
When the rear end of the freight car ;
was seen corning by the occupant of the
draw ing room car, there was a mad rush
for the doors in order to escape. A Miss
Lydia Thompson jumped from the rear
platform to tne ground, and as the tram
was over a trestle, the distance was over
a dozen feet, and she suffered a severe j
sprain of the ankle. Other passengers
that jumped were injured more or less,
while those in the rear cars were badly ’
bruised by the jolt as the two trains came ;
together. It was moat fortunate that i
there was no serious accident, for had the
sleepers been throw n to the other side of
the track instead of where they weie,
nothing would have saved the over-turn­
ing of the sleeper, and a roll down from '
the trestle would have surely resulted in
serious loss of life.
The overland going
north was delayed an hour and a half in
getting the trucks back on the track, and
the morning train going south was de­
layed until nearly noon before the track i
was cleared of the w recked caboose and
cars of the freight train.
The freight train was in charge of Con­
ductor John Andrews and Engineer John
Scott, and the passenger train was under
the charge of Conductor M. Young and
Engineer Frank Craw
Liberati and the
members of his famous band were pas­
sengers on the overland train

SULLIVAN THE DRUNK.

John L. Can't Stand Prosperity, and
Fills Up With Whiskey.
New York, Sept. 24.—John L. Sullivan
was very drunk and very ugly yesterday
afternoon when be stepped,' or rather
staggared. out of a cab and into the cafe
of the Hoffman House. He pushed up
against the bar and commenced to swear
in good Bostonian style.
Detective
Jacobs, of the hotel, walked up to him
and said, “Say, John, that is not the kind
of language for a gentleman to use.”
“Ami who are you?’’ said John.
“Detective Jacobs; you know me well
enough. You don’t want to make any
fuss in here. The best thing you can do
is to go home.”
John was finally induced to go out, ami
us he got into his cab be threw a handful
of monev on the sidewalk, where a crowd
of small boys scrambled for it. John told
the driver to go to Jim Wakeley’s. Billy
Edwards undertook to talk to Sullivan,
but the pugilistic gentleman had no use
for him and refused to hold any conver­
sation whatever with him.
The affair created considerable excite-
u ent in the cafe at the time, and a crowd
eollecteil on the sidewalk and watched
J jhn L.’s exit. Sullivan was rescued in
time ami put to bed at Taylor’s hotel,
Jersey City. The audience at the Acad­
emy of Music, in that city, was not wholly
disappointed, as he was able to go through
his part in "Honest Hearts and Willing
Hands." After the curtain dropped he
returned to the hotel and started in on a

Philadelphia, Hept. 25.—The case of the

jection or challenge from anybody, but it
cannot be justly said to be of an obscene
or lewd character, nor is it either ill its
sentiments or language in any degree cal­
culated to minister to corrupt or licenti­

to encourage depravitv in any form.”
The court was reminded upon uugument
