(»regoti state horticultural society met at the Corvallis agricultural college Monday. In the |siblished proceedings in the Oregonian is the following: Jlr. Whitman of Jackson county, n ud concerning “Fruit aud Fruit < ¡rowers,” > and concerning farm life in general. With the advent of the railroad to Rogue river 1 valley came the fruit grower, looking for good location* to grow all worts of fruit, from the semi-tropical varieties to thotw of the temperate zone. Some people dis couraged fruit growing there, but one man of iron will and unusual energy set the example. J. 11. stewart had show n that Southern Oregon could supply the j north with water melons as well as peachco, ami his orchards and fruit plant ing now covered 200 acres. It is now- shown that Southern .Oregon equals, if it does not excel, any part of our state in growing apples, pears, peaches and grapes, and ir, melons it excels, ft is now proved that a spraying outfit is as necessary to the fruit grower as a plow is to thoordinary farmer. It is important to kill all jiests with a preparation and I be bad ext>erimented to that eml. It can It can i»e said that the fruit grower has the sympathy of ail classes of society, I because he supplies a mo»l luaxfiiary product, that is lioth a luxury and neces sity in every family, lxith for health and uae. Hon. J. A. Varney, one of the state horticultural commissioners, who has' lwen on a (oiif of inspection throughout the state, tells tlie Rural Spirit that lio| has not found an apple orciutril but has the eodlin moth. He regards the crop a failure, and says there w iilbe no fruit ex cept where spraying has been vigorously kept up. I11 this connection the Northwest Pacific Farmer says: "Last week Sam Clark, through the Oregonian, said that he had examined his fruit trees anti that he found no signs of the eodlin moth on the apples, and that he thought probably the hard w inter im>| destroyed them, or i words to that effect. We supjiose the Oregonian would priut anything given it on agriculture, no matter how much ig-1 norance it might contain, as we have ne ver heard it intimated that thcOregonian knew anything at all alxxit agriculture in any of its various b-anebes, and it is evident that Clark, though lie does stvle himself the agriculture editor of the great PBpcr does not know much about the habits of i’u?eodlin moth, or lie would not have made such a »t;i«*.n;*.nt ami we hope that our orchardists will neither nxy up on Mr. Clark nor the Oregonian in the t matter hut continue to spray their trees." isni.AND FOR SALE!
