Col onel Will Hays is a colonel be« ause he is such a gifted poet, while Colonel Albert Dietzman was given his title by Govor- Knolt because he was the greatest busi ness manager on earth. I trust .hese facts will make it some what clearer to the wondering northerner why colonels are so plentiful in Ken tucky. But there are other reasons. Many prominent citizens are honored with this complimentary title simply as a recognition of their merit by the com munity. Thus every man who conducts a large diatillery is ipso facto a colonel; for instance. Colonel John M. Atherton, or Colonel Tom Fherlev. Every promi nent railroad official is also a colonel; for instance, Colonel Mi ton H. Smith. Every congressman is a colonel, as Col onel Asher G. Caruth. Every man with a government office is a colonel, as Col onel George Du Relle. Every great edi tor is a colonel, like Colonel Henry Wat terson. The chief of the police depart ment ia a de facto colonel, as Colonel Wood. Then there arc other gentlemen who are colonels because no other title fits them. But the law on the subject is a little vague and has never been formu lated by the Legislature. If a man haa been a captain in the war, never call him captain; call him colonel. He is entitled to this promotion twenty- four years after the war closed. The only men proud to be called captain are Luve watches o'er my quiet ways, Kind voice* speak my name, And lips that find it hard to praise. The whiter the snow, the darker look all objects against it. Why not admire the whiteness which forms the background? Then, if we look within, if we see with impartial eyes the short-comings of our own lives, will we not bo slower to notice flaws in others? Shall we not say, in the words of Shakespeare: “I will chide no breather in the workl but myself, against whom I know most faults?" If then we are eo frail, eo weuk ourw lvcs, so de pendent on the kindness aixl forbear ance of others, shall we not do the little we can to make the world brighter in turn for them ? If there is anything to admire or praise—and there is always something— speak the word now ; it will brighten the weary hours, it will prevent, mayhap, a failure to-morrow—a failure caused by discouragement and pain.
