W e note that the hyper-ethical
journalist here uses a news article
prepared and first published by the
Sentinel and credits it to a Day pa
per which “ lilted” it without credit
— Sentinel. N a u g h ty , naughty!
but that is quite natural. The work of
the roadmaster up to now has been of
a purely preliminary character. The
Record does not believe Mr. Murdock
will, when he gets a chance, cling to
Watsonville.
That is all the people
want. If Mr. Murdock is fair and com
petent he should be given a square deal
and left immune from criticism.— Re
cord.
While nothing may have been shown
for the money expended by the road-
master’s office, the article appearing
on another page of this issue, from the
Good Roads Association, gives one a
pretty good idea of what it was spent
for. Even it, however, does not take
into account the systematizing of the
records of the office itself, as explained
in last week’s Herald.

The Scenic’* Treat
During the late campaign, and
betore election, the Herald made a
clean-up of its “ cards for candi
dates.” So we do not mind callin g
attention to the lact that our es
teemed contemporary is still adver
tising “ a large s lo ck ” of them.
To supplement these we have a very complete stock
of fresh Groceries. We are going out of the dry
goods business and devoting our entire time to see
ing that you are properly supplied with groceries.
Young is Granted Pardon
eariy in the morning.
Young and his friends are deeply
grateful for the mercy shown him. The
action of Gov. Withycombe was taken
on a personal request from Judge Coke.
When Young was tried, his only de
fense was that he was justified in
shooting Condas. He found Condas in
his daughter’s room early in the morn
ing and shot him twice, Condas dying
soon afterward.
The Scenic will treat «ts patrons to
morrow evening to a novel and pleasing
musical act, when Etta May appears
with h e r instrument, “ The Violin
Ha p,” her own invention and the only
one of the kind in the world. This she
plays by drawing two steel rods wound
with copper wire across the strings
producing enchanting tones which at
different times very closely resemble a
violin, mandolin and guitar, but much
louder, making a clever musical act.
No advance in price.

Common usage and appropriateness may be said to “set tbe
fashion” in writing papers, in that while certain sizes are always
basically correct for various purposes, the tendency of the mo
ment may be toward some particular style of finish or shape of-
envelope.
While it is not necessary nor always desirable that one con
fine herself to the moment’s particular fad, there are times when
one wishes to be strictly “up to the moment,’’ and on such oc
casions it is well to remember
