they are not satisfactory. Buy at Home.
We
A certain Coquille merchant in discussing the mail
order problem last week said it was his opinion that near
ly as much money was sent out to mail order houses each
month as was spent in Coquille.
Probably this was an
exaggeration; but the merchant had some grounds for his
statement. “ We cannot compete with these houses in
prices,” he continued, “ they sell in such amounts as to
enable them to buy in large quantities and to sell cheaper.”
In that sentence the merchant summed up the whole
matter. I f the home merchant sold more goods; if he
was able to turn over his stock oftener, he would be able
to buy more advantageously, have his goods come in
larger consignments and therefore sell at a price more
nearly equalling that o f the mail order house.
It is the man who patronizes the mail order hmise
that causes the one who buys at home to pay high prices.
Buy at home and help toward lower prices.

At present there are three big proj
ects under way—the Lincoln highway,
the Dixie highway and the extension
o f the Northwest trail. These projects
are national. They link up widely sep
arated parts o f the country. They join
the Pacific with the Atlantic, the great
lakes with tin* gulf. They are all en
terprises made possible only through
public spirit. Millions o f dollars have
been poured into their treasuries by
farmers and by men o f the cities. They
are propositions that have touched both
civic pride and selfish interest They
have got down to tlie people. It Is the
people who have made them possible.
It Is the people's imagination that has
responded to their plans—a fine road
passing your home, a flue road over
which you can take your goods to
market, a tine road for your little car.
