He becomes associated with the banker in some business deals and the old man begins to thaw just a little. Tueu come ruuurs of an up heaval in the money world. Securi ties grow wobbly. Ruthven, the respected conservative old banker, falls a victim to the lures of au un scrupulous partner, who sacrifices all Ruthven’s interest to save him self. Ruin stares the old banker in the facd and disgrace also in the latter days cf an honorable, respected business career. The blow is too much for him to bear up under and he is unable to assemble the loose ends ol bis disorganized business. It is then that the Gilded Fool comes to the rescue. With ready business acumen and energy be routes Ruthven’s foes and exposes those who have plotted against the banker. Fighting with his back to the wall, he displays the true met tle of which he is made. By dint ot his ability alone the day is saved and Ruthveti’s honor is safe. The old banker overcome by gratitude, readily consents to the match be tween Short, now a real figure in the financial world, and Margaret and thus "A Gilded Fool” comes into hie own. An all-star American cast sup porting one of America’s greatest actors, William Farnum, in an American drama of great power and virility makes the William Fox feature production of Henry Guy Carleton’s striking play “ The Gild ed Fool’’ a peculiarly distinctive and notable event in screen history Edgar Davenport, whose excellent and finished work showed to such remarkable advantage in the Wil liam Fox production of the great Charles Frohman success. T h e Thief, adds new laurels to his fame as a dignified and polished actor by his splendid portrayal of Ruthven, the hide-bound old banker with his conservative business methods and narrow prejudices against the swift flowing tides of modern life. In this part, which affords remarkable scope for the display of Mr. Daven port's powers, the actor is seen at his very best. Charming and beautiful Maude Gilbert, whose striking portraiture of the erring wife in Samson, will be long recollected by all who saw that great William Fox picture, plays with winning sweetness and ability the difficult role of Margaret Ruthven. the old banker’s daugh ter who sees despite his wild ways and spendthrift manners, the germ of a great man in Chauncey Short, the Gilded Fool, played by Mr. Farnum She is his good angel and her good influence forms an impor tant factor in the Gilded Fool’s re demption alter he has passed through fires ot ruin and disgrace. It is a wonderful part wonderfully played. Miss Gilbert even sur passes in its depiction the ability sbe displayed to such noteworthy ad vantage in the stirring scenes of the memorable Thief.
