Shots Cause E xcitem ent
Considerable excitement w a s
caused Friday evening at about 6:30
when five shots distuihed the quiet
of our little city, coming from the
upper story of A W Kelley’s resi
dence across from the city hall.
Quite a crowd collected hut no oue
seemed auxious to investigate ihe
cause of the sleds. As usual when
iu need of an officer's services none
could be fouud.
Finally A. W.
Kelly came up tioiu his store aud
investigated. Upon coming out of
the bouse he informed the crowd
that there was no trouble and that
his son Ellis and a young man
who boards witn them had tired
the shots out of the hack window
on the second lloor of the house.
This is rather a poor policy to in
dulge iu aud there is an ordinance
prohibiting the discharge of fire
arms within the city limits.
The
young men considered it a good
joke hut the citizens List gathered
in front of the house differed witn
them. As one man was heard to
remark, “It was a mighty poor time
to he celebratiug the 4th of July.”
Saturday morning the boys were
fined $5 apiece by Recorder Law
rence.
It is pointed out that when our
youth can afford $2 a shot lor tar
get practice it ought to cause a dim
inution ot the talk of hard limes.
By the time this paper is out it
may he sale to tell something on a
cartain city editor who shall be
nameless.
When the excitement
was at its height and the crowd was
standing iu the street anxiously
peering at the upper windows lor
signs of possible tragedy, the icport-
er was there aud on the job. Just
then one of the young men in the
dusky room, who were thcm-elves
wondering what all the crowd had
collected for, struck a match. Its
resemblance to the flash of a gun
caused such a poignant feeling in
the reporter that a hole had just
been bored through his anaiomy,
aud brought such a shock to his
nerves, that this is suspected to he
