Coquille offers a profitable field for m any and varied industries, to whom its people are ready to render every encourage ment. A postage stamp is a small thing individually, yet in New Y ork city the postal authorities have u n e a rth ed a well defined plan to steal mil lions of dollars worth of stamps, and sell them th ro u gh protected agents at reduced rates. T h e traffic in United States stamps, it is stated, has baffled the authorities tor years, b u t the officers now have the opera tors behind prison bars. Sitting Bull was typified to a niceity on our streets Monday and on the screens at the Royal in “ Cus te r’s Last F ig h t,” where the savage butchery caused merely a thrill Deeds of deviltry of the Indian are now depicted only in im ag ry —a vast and welcome contrast to those witnessed by the pioneers who peopled this section forty and fifty years ago. T h e mail arrived one day last week with newspapers filled with talcum powder— probably caused by a broken package sent by par cel post. Postmaster Linegar is not an avowed expert on the skin-sooth ing decoction an d is not positive as to the n atu re of the material, but a lady with whom we are acquainted and who has handled it iu consid erable q u an tities—on her face— pronounces it talcum. We take the liberty to remind our farmer friends that our mem bers in congress -if asked— would send to all who make application, the A gricultural Year Book of r g r i T h e H erald has just received a copy kindly furnished us through the medium of S enator Chamber- lain, and it contains much of in terest to even those who are not tillers of the soil. T h o se wanting flower and vegetable seeds—p arti cularly the ladies— for the Jan u ary an d F eb ru ary distribution, should likewise make application. There are m .ny governm ent publications, such as farmers’ bulletins and liter atu re on mining, education and other subjects that can be had for the asking. Send your request to S enator Chamberlain and it will be attended to. While the Californians were suf fering from the worst freeze they have ever know n, the apple and peach growers of the A tlantic states were fearful th at the long-continu ed warm weather would torce their trees into bloom in J a n u a ry and th at th ey would be caught by a subsequent frost and the prospect o f a crop ruined. One man in W ash ington, William F. Thomas, is re potted to have purchased too tons of ice, hauled it to his apple or chard, had it cracked and piled aro un d his trees in an effort to keep tlu-m from blossoming. T h a t, it w i s stated in the local press, was done on the advice of the D epart ment of Agriculture.
