PATRIOTISM OUR MOTIVE O B IT U A R Y Died— In Coquille. Wednesday morning, December 4. 1912, Mrs. Maty J PendletoD, aged 70 years. Mrs. P en dleto n was a native of Tennessco, and early in life moved to the west in the primitive mode of conveyance. Sho was a resident of Coos couuty for forty years hav. iug lived a g reater portion of the time in the F a t l$lk district near Coquille. Two children were born to h er— a d a u g h t- r, Dure, who died several years ago and is buried at Empire, ami a son, C. E . Pendleton, of E a t Elk who survives her. T h e cause of death, as given by the physician in charge, was aueu- risra. Mrs. Pendleton was stricken with the malady at about 5:30 Tuesday evening and her suffer ing was ended at 5:15 the following morning. H e r long residence in Coquille won for her many ac quaintances. While n o t a mem ber of any re ligious organization, she wes a re g ular atten d an t at church services and always led a life in keeping with Christianity. F u n eral services at E llin g s e n ’s U n d ertak in g Parlors today ( T h u r s day) at 2 p m., conducted by Rev. T u r n e r B. McDonald. Mrs J. W. believe entertained at her home Wednesday evening, N o vember 26, the event being in honor of the birthday of Miss Claire Sher wood. Ten tables were occupied by jo y o u s guests who participated in the game of “ 500.” Card honors were won by Mrs. T. B. Currie and E. J- Smith. A cousolation prize was given Mrs. L H. H azard and J. A L am b and consisted of a framed origiual verse by a local poet. T h is prize caused considera ble merriment. A n elegant lunch eon was served. Ad kins, killed on the Seeley-Aoderson lo gg in g railroad, arrived last S u n day to take possession of the body Mr. A dkins has telegraphed rela tives in Minnesota stating the badly cut up condition of the unfortunate, deeming it advisable, under the cir cumstances, to inter the remains in the loud where fate befell. The inebriates attempted to thw art the officer’s endeavor at arrest by each of them resisting with all the anim al force at their command, hut without avail. One of the culprits, Bill Howell, broke two ribs and otherwise in jured Marshal II ckam when he was on the force, and the rem embrance of this occurrence caused our city marshal to use ex tra vigilance and power, Howell’s associate in lawless acts was F reem an Stewart, a likewise powerful man, who finally had to yield to the law. The miscreants each contributed twenty dollars to the city coffers, but many have expressed the opin ion th at Howell, it being his second offense, should he made to suffer the maximum penalty. T hu s we have an o th er evidence of the baneful results accruing to those who patronize a traffic made legitimate — aud only averted — by law. The Coos Bay Times gives the in formation th a t out of a total vote of G91 at the municipal election held in Marshfield Tuesday, 191 women used their franchise.
