The West Coast Oil company com posed of Uandon men are Belting up machinery for deep boring on property owned by them near the Coos and Curry line. The city council held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of paying Longston & Bay- liss $1,000 on their city hall con tract, and it was so ordered. The Scenic not only gives a good show but will give away a sick of flour to one of its patrons next Monday evening. Other gifts will be the order for several weeks to come. W. Frank Petitt, the optician and watchmaker, is now ready for busi ness in the building three doors east of the Herald office. Mr. Pet itt is hopeful of receiving a share of the public patronage. M. Edwards, residing for some time past at Parkersburg, left with bis family the first of the week for the State of Washington. He has not at present decided upon the ex act location for a permanent resi dence. Ernest Perrott returned with his bride last Thursday by steamer Breakwater. He reports a rough sea voyage and he reluctantly fur nished food for the fishes without the aid of hands. Mr. Perrott is now at his post of duty with Henry Lorenz. Dr. Walter Culin performed an autopsy upon the body of Mrs. Mary Cunningham, who died sud denly in this city last week. The physician in charge of the woman’s case is exonerated and the evidence does not warrant further investiga tion. Melvin Kern of Coquille, whose whereabouts have not been known for some time, was located last week by Eric Bolt, when Willam ette Univeraity met Uncle Sam’s men at Vancouver in football. Mr. Kern is with the engineer corps stationed at Vancouver — Times. R. S. Knowlton has placed a fine new modern glass front in his drug store, thus not only affording more light to the interior, but giving greater facility for displaying some of the more seasonable goods. The front is pleasing to look upon and reflects credit upon our estimable citizen. As a result of the Sunday school contest being held by the M. E. Church South, under the leadership of Mrs. J- S. Lawrence and Geo T. Moulton, there was an attendance last Sunday, November 10, of one hundred. The contest will contin- ue until Christmas and no doubt the number will have doubled by that time. Julius Wayland, ebitor of the Appeal to Besson, the well known socialist newspaper, committed sui- | cide in Girard, Kansas, on Monday last. J Fatal Accidents Roscoe Bolsinger, aged about twenty-three years, an employe of the McDonald & Vaughan logging camp on Daniels’ creek, died at Mercy hospital, Monday last from injuries received while on a mov ing logging train Bolsinger was riding on next to the last car in a train of eight cars He was seen riding one of the logs when the train was coming down, but was not seen for some time before the train reached the dump. When he was found missing, the trainmen started back and found him sitting in the middle ot the track. He is said to have spoken only a few words to the effect that “ I am all in boys.’’ Mrs. W. W.
