The .young men of Coquille have coubtructed a chute from the rear of the store of Henry Lorenz to the river, a distance of about 100 feet. They attire themselves in bathing garb, mount a toboggan and away they glide to the refreshing water of the restless stieam. Several men of mature years have availed them selves of tho privilege afforded among them bring H. O. Anderson who is highly elated in the sport derived from the beaver and otter’s game. It is an exhilarating and beneficial pasttime and, if partici pants are prompted solely from the eujoyrnout obtained by the slide, they must necessarily he outwardly cleansed from a plunge in the river. Caution should be exercised to avoid accidents and fatalities. Three weeks ago the leading churches of Coquille adopted the plan of holding Union services in the evening and as a result larger attendance and more interest in church work is noteJ. Believing that “ brethren should dwell togeth er in unity” especially in religious matters, the pastors of the M. E. Church South, Presbyterian and Church of Christ, determined to unite aod thus demonstrate their unselfish devotion to the cause of Christianity. They extended the hand of brotherly love to pastors of all other denominations of the city to join with them in this laudable act, but efforts thus far have been futile. The first union service was held in tho Church of Christ, Uev. Frank Adams of tbe Presbyterian church being the speaker; the second at the M. Pi Church South where Rev. T. B. McDonald of the Church of Christ delivered the sermoD, and the third will be held at the Pres byterian church next Sunday even ing where Rev. C. H. Cleaves of the M. E. Church South will speak. "H ow good and how pleasant it is” to see our popular divines oc cupying the pulpit in unity and in love one with the other. Conduct of this character cannot fail to be conducive of good where broad uainded, liberal views find lodge ment to the exclusion of narrow ness, bigotry and self-esteem. Better music is afforded by these united services, which is another pleasing feature. The union services will be held until the first Sunday in September announcement of which will be made from time to time in the Herald. -------------- «#►* Presbyterian Social Fifty-five people attended the social given by the ladies of the Presbyterian church at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C R. Barrow on Thursday evening last. Music, rec itations, social converse and outdoor sanies by the young people contri buted to tbe enjoyment of all. Tbe premises were nicely decorated with flags, flowers, ferns and fir boughs and the grounds brilliantly illuminated by Jupanese lanterns. A delicious luncheon was served the coffee being superb. The Pres byterian ladies are expert enter tainers. --- --#»■ — -------- Troubles o f a Heavyweight Attorney R. H.
