CINCINNATI, Oct. 12.— The House of Deputies today put itself on record by an unanimous vote as believing in the Bible as the word of God, thus making official decla ration that the statement to the contrary, made in the cource of de bate last Saturday by the Rey. A. A. Morrison, of Portland, Or., did not represent the sentiment of the church. The matter was brought before the conveution by the Rev. James R. Winchester, of Memphis, Tenn., who offered a resolution declaring that "the House place itself on rec ord in declaring that the Holy Scriptures are beyond doubt ac cepted by the church as the word of Almighty God.” Although defeated in the House of Deputies because the clerical and lay delegates did not agree upon it, the proposal to include in the ritu al of the church a form of prayer and unction for the sick, not as a sacrament in preparation for death, but as a means of healing, is far from being dead in the opinion of its advocates. The report of the joint committee on the subject is still to be acted upon in the House of Bishops, and if it approves by a considerable ma jority, it is likely the House of Bishops, will approve its action. No Eubject that has arisen since the convention began has aroused bo much interest among church men. The opinions expressed range from absolute faith in actual miracles through the power of God to unbelief in the power of any. thing but medical treatment to cure the sick. The fact that the so-called Em manuel movement had its origin iD the Protestant Church in Emman uel parish, Boston, has had a deep influence. Churchmen take the ground that expert medical advice is the prime essential in all cases of illness, but that if faith in ultimate cure can be inspired in the patieut, either through religious ministration or otherwise, the physician’s work will be greatly aided.
