WESTERN MEN
They are the B ist Type of Americans
So Declars the Venerable
Fighting Bob
“ On the Pacific Coast are the best;
type of Americans in the country, the
men who
do things.”
declares
‘ ‘Fighting B ob” Evens, retired Ab-
miral of the United States Navy.
“ It is a long way from the Atluntic
Coast to the Pacific, and it requires
courage, nerve aggressiveness to
muke the journey, so that in the
gradual sifting those who eventually
reach the Pacific Coast are the
cream of the Nation, the highest
type of Americans.
“Completion of the Panama Canal
will not flood this Coast with the im-
migrents now landing on the A t
lantic side, for the reason that the
immigrants wili not pay the rate to
San Francisco or Portland when
they can reach New York cheaper.
The immigrants to be in big cities.
Such immigrants as do And their
way to the Coast will be the better
class, the people of the northern
countries of Europe, who find this
climate like their own. I will very
probably become aSloper myself, as
I contemplate making my residence
either in California or one of the
northern states. I want to live
where people do not carry a knife
in their boot.
“ The Panama Canal will mean
many things to this Coast, especial
ly in the way of commerce. The
country between the sea and the
Rocky Mountains is already develop
ing at marvelous rate, and those
people will have things to send to
the seaboard and tbe people of the
coast must send supplies inland. A
great deal of traffic will be for rail
roads, but the water trsflic will be
legitimate and large, for there is tbe
immense field of ilio OreDt. But
much must be done to take care of
this commerce, an 1 sailroad com-
paDidg must not moDoplize tbe
steamship lines. The cities must
provice municipal wharves, and
there are many other details to re
ceive attention. Route one man will
have to npp-ar on the scene to
awaked the coast to a realization of
what it must do, to »hake the peo
ple up aod compel them to take ad
vantage of teeir oppertunities. I
don’ t know who the man will be de
veloped, as the Coast has always
developed the right man at the right
time
“ Among other problems to be met
will be that of fuel. Once the canal
is finished, there will be an uproar
from th9 Hawaiian Is’ands. Japan
and China for fuel, for commerce
will increase so rapidly that proper
provision must be made for tbe
vessels. I have investigated and
am couvenced that there is an ocean
of oil, fuel oil, underlying the State
of California. Oil must be the fuel
of tbe future, for naval vessels as
chased R D No 25........... 30 45 well as for others. With coal there
is a great waste which must be car

A Good Position
Can be had by ambitious young
meu and ladies in the field o f “ Wire
less” or railway telegraphy. Since
the 8-hour law became effective,
and since the Wireless companies
are establishing stations through
out the countiy there is a great
shortage of telegraphers. Positions
pay beginners from $70 to $90 per
month, with good chance of ad
vancement.
The National -Tele
graph Institute of Portland, Ore.,
operates six official institutes in
America, under supervision of R. R.
and Wireless Officials aud places all
graduates into positions.
It will
pay you to write them for full de
tails.
