Precautions A gain st Fire,
Portland, Ore., July 20.—,A vig
orous campaign to save the forests
of the Pacific Northwest from the
wboltsale fire losses that occur dur
ing each dry season, has been un
dertaken by the Western Forestry
and Conservatiou Association, em
bracing the States of Montana.
Idaho, Oregon, Washington and
California. The work of the associ
ation is under the general direction
of Forester E. T. Allen, with head
quarters here.
The association represents thir
teen minor associations, four of
them in this State Printed matter
is being sent out and fire warnings
are being issued to timber growers,
tnillmea, farmers and others direct
ly concerned. Officers of the asso
ciation are: President, A .L . Fle-
welling, Spokane; secretary, G. M.
Cornwall, Portland; treasurer, A.
W. Laird, Potlatch, Idaho. The
motto of the organization is: “ For
est use supports all indus!ries; forest
waste injures all. Promote fire
protection and share the gain."
In its literature now being sent
out, the association
makes the
statement that half the mercantile
timber in the United States today
is contained in the five States in
the association, and that lumber
production in the same territory is
one-fifth of the total ol the whole in
the country. The forest protective
associations which it represents al
ready spend annually over $Ioo,-
000 for fire patrol.
The association also employs a
trained forester to assist its mem
bers who control timber to install
and maintain improved methods of
protection, cutting and reforestation.
For the aim of the organization is
not only the protection of existing
forests but the judicious cutting of
ripe timber and reforestation of log
ged off and burned over areas.

Walter Clarno of Upper Pistol
river proved himself to be a hero a
few days Bgo by rescuing two ladies
from a watery grave. Two neigh
bor ladies were visiting at the home
of Win, Clarno and in company
with Mrs. Clarno went to tbe riyer
to take a bath. The neighbor ladies
ventured too far into the stream and
neither being able to swim, the swift
current took them under.
Mrs.
Clarno, unable to render any assist
ance, called to the men folks who ran
to their assistance.
Walter, with
the bravery of all Curry county
boys, plunged into the water to
save the drwoning women. The Is.
dies in tbeir struggle for life, caught
hold of tbe brave boy and they all
sank beneath the surface repeatedly.
When more drowned than aliye,
clasped in tbe death grip of one of
the ladies and bolding the other by
the hair, Walter managed to grasp
tbe end of a pole which bis father
reached to him, and in this way got
the ladies to shore nearer dead than
alive.—Gold Beach Globe.
