San Francisco, Jan. 13.— That
the Oregon Western railway, the
proposed branch of the Southern
Pacific between Drain, Or., and
Marshfield, Or., is to be completed
wi'liin a very few months was made
kL'.wn here today by William Hood,
chief engineer of the Southern Pa
cific company, who admitted that
he had been ordered to prepare
est mates on the cost of the com-
ph tion of the road, and that as soon
us his complications were finished
he would submit them to the heads
i f the Hariiman system in the east
f r approval.
“ I am compiling an estimate of
the remaining cost of the construc
tion, Drain to Marshfield, for pre-
suntation east, upon which will de
pend the probable decision to re-
Bume work on this road,’ ’ was
llo o d ’6 answer to the question ns
to whether construction work on
this important branch was about
to begin. He said he had been
working on his estimates for sever
al months and that only an unusual
amount of other important work had
delayed the estimates to this date.
Questioned about the report of
the sale of the Bandon and Port
Orford railroad, he said he was not
familiar concerning the sale of that
company or negotiations which
might lead up to a sale of the road.
He said he had heard o f the incor
poration of such a road by Bandon
capitalists for the purpose of tap
ping rich timber lands, but had not
heard of any construction work be
ing done ou it.
The probable completion of the
Oregon Western will complete the
formation of a network of railways
in the most fertile parts of Oregon
and California. Most of the coun
try to be traversed by this road is
timbered with white pine, vast for
ests of great trees covering the
land, which is reported by agents
of the company to be extraordin
arily rich.
The region is all virgin soil, ex
cepting parts near the old railroad
lines, and little agriculture has been
attempted there, on account of the
difficulty of transporting the pro
ducts to market.
Another rich section that the
new line will tap is that between
Marshfield, O r, and Eureka, Oal.
The section around Eureka is one
of the most productive in the state
of California. For years the steam
ship lines have furnished the only
transportation out of that port, and
San Francisco has been the destina
tion of most of the products from
that portion of the state. With
the completion of the Oregon West
ern, and the probable extension
down the coast so as to connect
with the line running north out of
Eureka, Oregon will probably take
away considerable of the business
that is now coining to this city by
steamer,at least until the comple
tion of the gap on the Northwi st
ern Pacific, now being closed, but
