Funeral of a Pioneer.
The funeral of William W. Hayes
t ok place at the Masonic cemetery
in Ibis city June 30tb, when was
la i 1 to bis last rest one of the best
known pioneers of this part of the
s'u'e. A large throng of bis friends
gathered to pay the last tribute of
respect to one whom they had
learned to love and respect. Rev.
8 II. Ilollenhenk, whom he had in
timately known for thirty years,
preached the funeral sermon. The
deceased was 83 years of age last
February.
Mr. Hayes, with his good wife by
his side, experienced all the vicissi
tudes, hardships and dangers which
l fel the pioneer who crossed the
pi uns by team fifty years ago. He
w s a successful trader with the In
dians, while altercations were not
al.rays avoidable, and he knew
more of their traits, traditions and
language than most men who came
ainoDg them in earlier days.
W . W. Hayes was born in Ohio,
February, 27, 1826. In 1844 he
moved with his parents to Indiana,
where he wa3 united in marriage to
Miss Martha Huntington in 1847.
In 1852 he left Indiana for Ore
gon, crossing the plains with an ox
team, being accompanied by his wife
and three children.
One child,
Sarah, died on the plains. He first
settled at Monticello, Wash., where
he engaged in the mercantile busi
ness.
In 1868, he,with his family moved
to Oakland, Douglas county, Ore
gon, where he continued in the
same occupation for six years, then
moving to Coos county, Oregon,
still following the mercantile busi
ness nt Coquille City, Oregon.
He served three terms as treasur
er of Coos county at the expiration
o f which he lived a retired life. His
loving and faithful wife preceded
him in death three years, having
died July 21, 1906, nnd since that
time he has lived with his children.
He leaves five children to mourn
his death. They are:
Mrs. Amanda J. Snyder of Marsh
field, Mrs. Maria L. Sterling of Mil
verton, Mr. James S. Hayes of Myr
tle Point, Mr. Everett E. Hayes of
North Bend and Mrs. Mary \V.
Jenkins of Bellingham, Wash.
One daughter, Mrs. Cynthia A.
Hunt, died June 1, 1907, at Spring-
field, Oregon.
He united with the Christian
church wben a young man, and
lived a Christian life ever siuce, be
ing a firm believer in God and a
strong advocate of the cause of
temperance.

Valparaiso, Chili, July 12.— It is
believed here that war between
Peru and Bolivia is imminent be
cause of the disorders at Papaz, fol
lowing the decision handed down
by Argentina in the boundary dis
pute between the two countries.
The Chilean admiralty said today
that Chili will remain neutral, hut
she is preparing to send warships
for the protection o f Chilean inter
ests.

Myrtle Point Enterprise.
The following clipping from the
Journal ( Black Hills, S. D.) speaks
for itself:
“ Mr. Haines, who was formerly
the locating engineer of the Chica
go A Northwestern Railroad Co.,
in Nebraska, South Dakota and
Wyoming, has made a proposition
to the Coos Ray, Oregon & Idaho
Railway Co., which was recently
organized by the people o f Coos
Bay, to survey and build a steam
railroad between Coos Bay and
some point at or near Roseburg,
Oregon, to have the road completed
and in operation in two years from
May 1 5 , 1910. The condition e x
acted by Mr. Haines is that the lo
cal company turnish the money to
make the survey and right of way,
but he agrees that this is to be re
paid to the persons advancing it
when those whom he represents
take the road over and commences
its construction.
The people of
Coos Bay have accepted the propo
sition and the banks o f Marshfield
and North Bend, as well as many
o f the business men and property
owners, have furnished the means
to comply with the conditions as to
the survey and right o f way.
“ Mr. Haines and a Crew o f men,
most of whom have worked under
him on the Northwestern system in
the Black Hills in W yom ing for
many years, are already in the field
and the work o f making the survey
is being pushed rapidly.
Mr.
Haines’ hackers are unknown, but
from his previous connection, it is
believed a powerful combination is
interested in opening up Central
Oregon.’ ’
Instantly
Killed.
Thomas W . Wilson, who came to
this section from Canada, was in
stantly killed at the camp o f Em
mett Pierce, eight miles above
Allegany, on Coos river, on Friday
afternoon, o f which the Coos Bay
Times gives the following account
of the accident:
Last evening Wilson quit work a
few minutes before 6 o ’clock and
started to walk down the skidway,
the long chute through which the
heavy logs are shot to the water.
He evidently presumed that all the
logs had been sent down for the
afternoon. However, just before 6
o ’clock, another log came down and
it was decided to kick it down the
skidwa'y. As it is customary, the
engineer blew the whistle as the
signal that a log was coming down
the skidway.
Wilson was quite aways down
when he heard the whistle. He
stopped on the elevated chute and
looked around.
Ralph Noel was
on the roadway near the chute and
called to Wilson to get off as a log
was coming. Wilson was appar
ently dazed and was slow to get off,
but finally started to get over on the
side and climb down.
Just then the log came down at
a teriffic clip. When near Wilson
it struck something and turned,
bounding out o f the regular chan
nel and striking him with awful
force.
He was killed instantly, his head
and body being badly crushed.

east line of “ C’ ’ street to a point which
is 562.5 feet east of said east line of “ C ”
street, by planking the roadway full
width, all plank covering to be 4 inclieB
thick, not less than 8 nor more than 12
inches wide, laid on stringers 4x8 inches
and securely spiked, said stringers to
be bedded into the ground except at
the east and west ends of said First
street, where the stringers shall be sup
ported on a timber tressle.
