NOTES OF TH E BIG E XPOSITION
Further Details of Plans for the A .
Y . P. Fair.
Seattle., May 23.— Probably the
most notable characteristic of the
Pay Streak of the Alaska-Yukon-
Pacific Exposition is the unusual
number of “ shows” having high
educational value.
As a usual thing the amusement
way of an exposition is all straight
fun, some of it, at times of question
able character but at Seattle is it a
different proposition.
Absolute
cleanliness has been insisted upon
and the directors have accepted
attractions of only the highest class.
At the St. Louis Exposition the
“ Battle of the Monitor and the
Merrimack,” took the gold medal
for excellence over all other amuse
ment features exhibited on the
Pike. It was more intensely inter
esting, of a higher educational
value and more ingenious from a
mechanical standpoint than any
other show.
It is reproduced with the same
care on the Pay Streak and Emmet
McConnell, probably the best show
man in America, the owner of the
attraction is personally supervising
its installation which will cost
$240,000.

has been the remedy generally
used until two years ago when Pro
fessor A. B. Cordlay of the experi
ment station at Corvallis tried
and found the lime sulphur ef
fective. The trials were continued
last year, when nearly equal re
sults were obtained as in the previ
ous year. For standardizing the
spray the “ stock solution” method
was adopted of preparing the spray
with a specific gravity of 1.27.
For field work tho hygrometer is a
cheap, simple and effective in
strument.
One gallon lime sul
phur of specific gravity 1.27 diluted
with 15 gallons water can safely be
used on foliage with the exception
of the peach. Fruitgrowers in a
few cases last season used the corn-
commercial lime sulphur solution
without test and ruined foliage
and part of the crop.
Some of
these preparation should be diluted
with 18 gallons of water.
Use
either the test or spray a few
branches of a tree and thus e
certain the strength safe to apply.
Apple scab can be controlled by
proper spraying with either bor-
d ea u x mixture or lime-sulphur so
lution. In humid regions probably
at least three applications are
necessary. The first just as the
blossoms are beginning to show
color, the second just after the
petals fall, the third some two or
three weeks later.
Professor Cordlay has found it
perfectly practicable to combine
any good brand of arsenate of lead
with pure lime sulphur solution
made as above directed.
But the
arsenate of lead is not necessary
in absence of codling moth.
The result of two seasons’ work
indicate that properly prepared
lime sulphur solutions may be ad
vantageously substituted for bor-
dsaux mixture when spraying for
apple scab. It has produced each
season a larger percentage of fruit
free from scab and has not pro
duced any “ russeting” of the fruit.
