Frank Burns of North Bend,
died at Mercy hospital in North
Bend yesterday afternoon from in
juries sustained at the Vaughn <fc
McDonald logging camp on Coos
River yesterday morning. A large
log which he was steering unex
pectedly turned from the line that
it was to run catching Burns and
crushing him horribly. Both legs
were broken, his head crushed and
his body badly crushed. He was
quickly brought to the hospital to
be cared for but his injuries proyed
fatal shortly after reaching there.
Burns was about twenty-two
years old. A brother, George Burns,
and a sister, Miss Lizzie Bums, re
side in North Bend. Another sis
ter, Mrs. Reynolds, moved to North
Bend a short time ago from Cali
fornia.
The funeral will probably be held

Sail Boat Upsets on Uoos Bay.
John L. Brown of Jordon’s Cove
and a stranger, recently from the
East, whose name is thought to be
Hensen, were rescued from a prob
able watery grave in the Bay near
North Bend shortly afternoon today
by H. B. Fulton, Henry Wickham
and C. M. Byler. The two were
out for a sail when their boat, either
through mismanagement or from a
sudden gust of wind upset, throw,
ing them into the Bay.
The upsetting of the boat was
witnessed by Miss Maude Coke who
happened to be looking out of the
window of the R. J. Coke home
which overlooks the Bay. She saw
the men struggling and realized
that they were in serious danger.
A telephone message to her father
at the Coos Bay Grocery told of the
men’s predicament. H. B. Fulton
who runs the "Rosebud” on Haynes
Inlet, accompanied by Messrs. By
ler and Wickman made a dash for
the scene. When they reaohed the
overturned boat, they found the
two occupants clinging to the side
badly chilled and scarcely able to
move, Hansen was quickly taken on
board the Rosebud but when it
came to taking Brown on board, it»
wbb found that his feet were so en
tangled in the ropes of the over
turned sail boat that the ropes had
to be cut away. He would never
have been able to free himself and
surely must have drowned bad not
