Plans have been drawn up hv the California & Oregon Coast Steamship Company for a new boat which it intends to build for operation out of Portland to Coos Bay in conjunction with the Alli ance. Bids for her construction will soon be let, and the company expects to have the job under way within tlie next month. It will take about five months before she is completed and ready for service. This announcement comes offi cially from George B. Gray, presi dent of the company, who is in the city from San Francisco look ing after the work of giving the Alliance her annual overhauling. He exhibited the plans of the pro posed new craft this morning, and said he had arrived at the conclusion that in the long run it is cheaper to build than to buy a steamer which would require fre quent repairs. In the past few days it has been persistently reported in shipping circles that the Alliance would be withdrawn from the Portland-Coos Bay route. Mr. Gray asserts that nothing has been so far from his purpose, but instead of that he in tends to improve the service in such a manner as to afford the Coos Bay and Portland merchants the best transportation facilities they have ever enjoyed. The new steamer will be modern in every respect— more up-to-date Fifteen Years’ Experience than any other coaster running C o q u il l b C i t y , O ke out of Portland— because she will be equipped with devices which were unknown when the majority of the craft were constructed. She J. J. STANLEY will have twin screws and is ex LAW YER pected to maintain an average speed of 13 knots an hour.
