Coquille tyerald. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 30, 1908. Our Loquacious Dairy "ispector. Coos county fans a Indy inspector of dairies She is unquestionably versed in the biTtter-mnking busi ness as are fow of her sex, and this fact, coupled with her energy and evident desire to develop the indus try in both county and State, has earned for her recognition in the councils of the State Dairy Assem bly. So much to the lady’s credit, and of that much everyone, particu larly io Coos county, is warrantably proud. Rut there is one lamentable fault possessed by Mrs. Yoakam. She talks too much with respect to her position—has too much imagination, which she indulges very likely with out weighing its injurious elects while it contributes happily to her craved for personal aggrandizement. The H erald is much grieved that Mrs. Yoakam should have given ex- pression to some of the utterances credited to her at the late Dairy Convention, and it feels that when a woman occupies a public position she must expect public criticism of her official acts, imparted with be coming courtesy. Such is likewise the opinion of some of our repre sentative dairymen who called at this office Saturday to indignantly refute some of the allegations made by the inspector. These allegations are denounced as ridioulous inventions— as being shamefully libelous upon the dairy men and their calling in Coos coun ty. We may have, as does other butter sections, a few dairymen who could be cleanlier in their habits and who merit some rebuke, but it is preposterous to advertise to the State that we have men io the busi ness who are hogs in human form. ist where, we are constrained to ik, did Mrs, Yoakam find a separ- tor that provided a welcome roost ior tbo barnyard fowl, and where the milk cans thrown about the cor ral for pigs to slumber in? Again, what person outside an insane asy lum would deliberately remove his shoe and sock in the presence of a strange lady and proceed to clean his milk cans with tne sock? Even if lacking the first principles o f de cency, would he not more likely use any old rag within reach of his fin ger tips rather than sacrifice a piece of his clothing? The idea is too ab surd for the sane person to harbor for a moment. When Mrs. Yoakam tells these things, groundless as they are, to a great State gathering she fails to re alize the injustice, the irreparable injury she is inflicting upon the very industry o f her county that she is expected to defend and assist. As a matter of fact, leading dairymen s ly nnd know that we have just as cleanly conditions in the dairies and creameries of Coos county as they have anywhere; they know it be cause they have visited these dairies and creameries quite as often as has Mrs. Yoakam--perhaps oftener, and are familiar with the true state of affairs therein existing. Had any such conditions been found as set forth by the inspector in her talk, these same men would have exposed and prosecuted the cases in the in terests of decency and the profes sion. The H erald in conclusion would say that if the newspapers have not misquoted Mrs. Yoakam respecting her utterances at the Salem Conven tion she should be asked to correct the damaging misetatemeots; if mis quoted she should publish the fact to preserve the good name of one of Coos county’s growing and import ant industries. Mr. Bell and iiis Franchise. It is to be noted with satisfaction that the Mayor and Common Coun cil of this city saw the wisdom at a glance of moving cautiously in the matter of granting the fran chise petitioned for by Seymour H. Bell et al. Nine days ngo Mr. Bell came to Coquille with his wished for franchise drafted and in his ov ercoat pocket, ready to spring the same upon the Council in a hurried session of that body with the evi dent hope of having it passed before the general public could realize the meaning of the proceeding. But the Council was not to be so dealt with. Neither were the peo ple asleep to the situation. If Mr. Bell had a meritorious proposition to offer it could await the necessary time to exploit its merits; if non- meritorious from the people’s stand point the pe< pie were entitled to time to ascertain the fact and place their stamp of disapproval upon it. The Board met and resolved to meet again with a citizen's commit tee which it appointed, consisting of Messrs Barrow, Thrift, Morri son, Hazard and Harlocker, when a franchise that would protect the city and be as liberal as deemed ad visable to all concerned could bo prepared and offered to Mr. Bell. The one which he desired passed was not to the liking of the Council upon investigation, nor was it to the citizens' mass meeting held at the court house last Wednesday eve ning. The Couucil and the citizens’ committee met Saturday evening and drafted a franchise that was deemed best to grant. This was forwarded to Mr. Bell for bis exam ination, and with the word that the matter would be finally disposed of on Monday night. Wnen the Board met Monday eve. ning there wer6 a number of towns people present with it; also Mr. Bell and Attorney John 8. Coke. City Attorney Chase was likewiso in at tendance. Mr. Bell took the floor to advocate his cause— said he de sired to install a No. 1 lighting and power system with 24-hour service, and “ might" invest as much as $100,- 000 in the community, but his an swers were always evasive when it was sought to ascertain whether he would generate bis current from a plant here or transmit it from the Porter plant on the bay. Of course there was much discussion to follow in which all took a hand, and senti ment generally was adverse to the good motives and purposes of the wily applicaut. Few needed specs or the brilliant (?) illuminant sup plied by Mr. Bell at Marshfield to discern the fact that it was some thing besides Frank Morse’s elec tric plant that he was eagerly in quest of. Very soon, on notion of Council man Burkholder, Mr. Bell wns told he would be given 30 days to de cide whether or not he would ac cept the franchise ns proposed by the city.
