The next important service in
your iuterest as to this matter, is to
see that Congress shall designate
the Coquibe River in the coming
River and Harbor Bill as one of the
points for recognition, in line with
the Engineer’s report. To this end
I visited the River and Harbor
Committee room of the House of
Representatives, and pointed out
the injustice done, in the failure to
make an appropriation for mainten
ance of the dredge, leaving to pub
lic spirited citizens to contribute
their own means to perform a pub
lic service, which should always be
done at public expense, and so in
tended by Congress to be done in
this case. Chairman Burton indi
cated his consent to amend, and
Representative Jones of the State
of Washington, who is the only
member of the River and Harbor
Committee from the Pacific North
west, kindly promised to consider
our further suggestions, and I shall
submit the data you furnished me.
I also conferred with our Senators
