All the older residents of Coquille
will remember Chas. W. White and
family who lived in this place for a
number of years up to eleven years
ago, during which time Mr. White
was superintendent of the Coquille
sawmill. The family moved from
here to Trinity couuty, California,
and some time ago Mr. White suf-
1 fered injuries while at work in a
mine.
But the most serious and appall
ing experience of any of the family
was that had by Willie, one of the
sops , whose age is now 20 or 21
years. His experience has soldom
been equaled and will cause a shud
der to read, as also a wonder that
he lives to tell of the terrible or
deal.
While groping his way in the
darkness between Douglas City and
Weaverville, in Trinity county, a
number of nights ago, traversing a
lonely and dangerous trail, Willie
fell over a precipice 75 feet in height
and rolled 25 feet further into the
bed of a creek after striking the
rocky ledge. His leg was broken
in the fall, the bones protruding
through the flesh in a horrible man
ner, and he was otherwise bruised
and lacerated. Yet in this condi
tion he managed to draw himself
out of the water and dragged his
maimed and bleeding body in the
direction of a known wagon road,
crawling laboriously through all the
weary hours of the rainy night.
Morning found the sufferer in
view of the road, and here he lay
more dead than aliye until a man
happened by, wnom he hailed, and
he was hurried to Weaverville for
medical attendance. At last reports
his condition was gradually mend
ing, and he will ultimately be him
self once more, though it is doubt
ful if he forgets the experience to
the last day o f bis existence.
The pain which the young man
suffered during all those nocturnal
aud rainy hours can scarcely be de
scribed, and it is bard to under
stand bow he managed to emerge
from the ordeal with his life.
According to the Evening Tele
gram Secretary of State F. W. Ben
son has said: " I never enUrtained
tbs slightest thought of resigning
my office, and will certuinly not do
so as long as there is a salary at
tached.” He was referring to a ru
mor published in the Telegram
some time ago.
In case ¡Secretary Bensou should
resign before the election of a
United States Senator, Governor
Chamberlain would appoint a Dem
ocrat to succeed him, and he, in
turn, would succeed to the Gover
norship in the event of Governor
Chamberlain’s election to the Sen
ate, and would appoint another
Democrat as Secretary of State and
create a Democratic State Board
with full control of all the State in
stitutions. Secretary Benson says
it is ridiculous to presume that he
would resign under these circum
stances.
