The W o m a n 's S tu d y Club
i The fire bell called out large
i crowds on two occasions last Friday
evening, causing considerable ex
citement, but comparativly little
j damage. Mr. Mills, the Dime Thea-
Club met on Saturday last with
Mrs. Nye. After a short business
session devoted to the discussion of
plans for an entertainment to be
given in the near fnture for the
benefit of the Reading Room, the
regular work of the afternoon was
taken up as follows:
Reading
“ Dutch Farming” by Mrs. Figg, and
General Items on the agricultural
life in Holland; Current Events oc
cupying the last half hour.

next meeting of the club will be

pected before the period of regis
tration closes. Hundreds return as
quick as they have registered, but
thousands have remained for the
drawing.
Gamblers have operated their
games without restraint and are
said to have made remarkable win
nings. They run pell mell 24 hour9
a day, with the 'tames as strong at
daybreak as when the sun sets.
To be broke in this country
means something to a man, because
he is without friends,'generally, and
at the same time where it is not easy
to make new ones. Every outgo
ing train carries many men who
have lost money and risk their lives
riding on breakebenms.
No land opening has ever brought
more people, and they all come with
money. Those who have the gambl
ing spirit strick to the roulette and
faro tables, with the result that
several hundred are living on char
ity until they can get out of the
country.
The

Mind.
The second proved a little more
serious. Just as the excitement
from the first had subsided the bell
sounded again. This time it was in
the Alexson building lately fitted up
for “ The Dime." The electric lights
had just come on and the moving
picture show got under way with a
good house when the film broke
and the loose end swinging round,
striking the reostate, catching on
fire. All who have seen a bit of cel-
uloid burn can im igine how rapid
ly this blaze gained headway. Wm
Wilson, who was operating the ma
chine, describes what followed as
next to an explosion. He endeav
ored to throw the burning film
from the booth, in which he failed,
and wav severely burned about the
hands and face in the attempt. The
fire. boys had the hose-cart on
the the scene in a vary short time,
but a garden hose which was found
handily at the Skooku.n restaurent
had been brought into play and the
fire had been extinguished before it
was necessary to turn on a big
tream.
