W E D N E S D A Y , OCT. 14, 1908.
The report of the department of
agriculture on the crop of 1908 is a
most remarkable one.
With the
exception of a few drj spots here
and there, the crop of 1908 is a
record breaker.
The crop of 1906
was so large that the railroads of
the country were taxed to their ut
most capacity to handle it, but the
crop of 1908, it appears, is going to
break all records.
But a very few
people in this country realize what
a tremendous factor the great crops
play in our prosperity.
Beginning
with May of every year, our m ill
ionaires begin going to Europe and
it haB been ascertained that they
take over to the old country about
$200,000,000 of our money. Durm^
the summer and fall of every year
another $100,000,000 is sent over
by European laborers working in
this country.
Then about October
and November of each year a large
number of foreigners who have been
working here two or three years re.
turn to their European homes and
carry in their pockets another $100-
000,000.
This makes about four
hundred million dollars transferred
from this country to Europe be
tween May and December of every
year. • This is a big drain on the
money market and last November,
the tension in money matters was so
great thai it snapped and wo have
not yet recovered from the effects
of that panic.
Now, after this
four hundred million dollars is
transferred to Europe, the farmer
begins to sell his wheat, corn, pork,
beef and cotton to the European
markets and that not only brings
back the four hundred million dol
lars carried over, but something
like five hundred million dollars ad
ditional.
Thus the monetary mar
ket is thoroughly replenished, so
when thero is a light crop of farm
produots we do not get back from
Europe so large u sum of money
This shows how thoroughly depend
ent we are on the farmer for con
tinued prosperity.
In view of the
tremendous crop of this year, it
would seem that nothing could pre
vent an era of great prosperity re
gardless of who is elected president
this fall
In fact, the country has
nothing to fear from the election of
such able and honest men ns either
Mr. Taft or Mr. Bryan.
Headed For Coos Bay.
Portland, Oct. 10.— Articles of
incorporation of the Oregon Mid
land Iiailroad filed at Salem today
with a nominal capital of $100,000
is believed here in a measure to con
firm reports which at different times
in recent years have been current to
the efiect that David Moffatt, who
is behind the Colorado Midland, in
tends to continue bis road into Ore
gon.
The articles of the Oregon M id
land state that the purpose of the
company is to build from Weiser,
Idaho, to Portland, Tillamook and
Coos Bay. Oregon. The incorpor
ators are men plainly chosen to
conceal the identity of the interest
behind the scheme. Putting those
things together with the factthat
the Colorado Midland is now push
ing toward Weiser as its goal,
lends considerable color to the sug
gestion that the Moffatt in Roseb-
terests are behind the new road—
