Not many of our readers are
aware of the extent of operations
being carried on at the Salmon
Mountain mining property, situated
in extreme southern Coos county
near the dividing line between C ooh
and Curry. This property, owned
by what is known as the Salmon
Mountain Coarse Gold Mining Com
pany, of which Orvil Dodge, one of
our widely known and respected pi
oneer citizens, is secretary and man
ager, has been in a state of active
development for five years past,
and there are at least indications of
abundant reward for the efforts put
forth.
Rut little has been published with
reference to the mine, yet the pe
cuniary benefits resultant from the
work carried on have long been felt
by business men of Myrtle Point,
Coquille and elsewhere.
The wri
ter bad recently the pleasure of a
visit to Salmon Mountain, and his
vague and half confident concep
tion of what was there to be reveal
ed was very effectually strengthen
ed soon after arrival.
There is no
longer any doubt that the company
have a good thing— a big thing, in
fact, when the machinery requisite
in reducing the ore shall have been
installed, the advent of which will
be tbe signal for increased pros
perity, permanent in its nature, in
the southern part of Coos county.
Salmon Mountain, and there is a
commanding view of the surround
ing country during transparent at
mosphere. A tributary of the Co
quille river flows near. The prop
erty is well watered, and an abun
dance of timber is at hand.
The
comp.my has at present a small
quartz mill, pulverizer and concen
trator; also a saw xrill of minimum
capacity, all operated by power
furnished from a six-horse steam
engine. A blacksmith Bhop and as
say office also stand among the
cluster of buildings that ornament
the tlevation. In the country ad-
jueent are several smaller mines and
prospects, all of which appear to be
bringing their owners good returns.
A visit to Salmon Mountain at
this season of the year is well worth
the pains of the sightseer, a journey
that mining men of experience in
particular make when on a trip
through the county.
We opine
that the near future will show the
place to be one of the important
gold-producing properties of the
rich and developing West.
