“ In all the talk we have had for
and against race suicide, 1 have
noticed little consideration of the
children's point of view," says Chris
tine Terhune Herrick in the May
Woman's Home Companion, “ In
the first place, why do people want
children? How many bring them into
the world with the thought that for
the sake of the country they should
have offspring, and that patriotism
demands a large family? I would
also like to know how many hear
children with the thought that their
progeny will not only make the
world a better place to live in, but
will, on their own account, be so
happy, so useful, so vuluable to
themselves that the parents could
not feel justified in rofusing them
existence.
“If these questions yvere answered
truthfully, I believe that in nine
hundred and ninety-nine cases out
of a thousand it would be shown
that parents desired children for
the sake of their own personal hap
piness (when they think of the mat
ter at all ) —for what the children
would mean to them of joy and in
terest. Such feelings are entirely
natural, but they cun hardly be
counted to the parents for right
eousness. If a man and woman
choose to have children because of
the pleasure they will themselves
receive from it, I do not think they
should be looked upon as civic ben
efactors only as ordinary human
beings who have made wise invest
ments on their own account which
turn out to be also an advantage to
the community at large.”
