The Coquille Educational I.egue
met in the High School room, as
usual, last Friday. It being the
last regular meeting of the year,
the report of offlebrs and committees
as well as the election of new officers
constituted a part of the program.
The Lecture Committee reported
that Mr. Q-reenlenf, of Salem,
would appear befor the pubblic again
probably on the evening of the
twenty-sixth.
Owing to a lack of time only a
few of the well chosen questions for
Round Table Talk could be touch
ed upon.
In discussing, how we shall in
spire the average pupil with an am
bition to complete his education,
the following points were made:
Lead the pupils to study the lives
of great men, Point out to them
the little they know and how much
more they ruaj get out of life if they
have a knowledge of the classics and
possess a liberal education.
As to the question, "Should
parents or ferehers ever pi rmit them
selves to ecold or threaten?,” it
seem d the c msensug of opinion
that they should not, but that the
majority do do it
One strong point made was that
if one does threaten the punishment
should be meted out in case the
child disobeys, since failure to do so
leads the child to repent the offense,
hoping to escape agin.
One parent, speaking from exper-
ience, told of depriving the child
of some little pleasure, as a conse-
quence of failure to obey.
“ Is there any danger liuely to
result to a teacher’s influnce in the
district, by her activity engaging in
the eoeial nffairs of the community?”
soemed to be largely debatable, since
there are so many things to bfe con
sidered, - such as kind of social af
fairs, different communities, etc.
One insisnee was cited where a
teacher apparently gained ground
by not attending a certain social
feature which to her own mind was
wrong. Another had gained by at
tending the social affairs of the com
munity. Another argued that the
teacher could safely attend social
•vents of an elevating and dignified
character.
The discussion had to close and
the remainder of the time gived up
to the eledtion of officers.
The following persons were elect
ed to serve during the ensuing
year:
President, Mrs. Peoples; First
Vice PreB, Mrs. Lawrence; Second
Vice Pres, Mrs. Maury; Third Vice
Pres, Mrs. Knowlton; Secretary,
Miss Walstrom; Treasurer, R. S.
Knowlton.
Mrs. Chase and Miss Wells were
elected a Comittee at large.
Tbo newly elected President as
sumed the chair and after some
appropriate remarks the meeting
adjourned.
